Baseball: Eagles perfect at 9-0

HANCOCK -- The New York Mills baseball team won by the 10-run mercy rule for the third consecutive game in a 10-0 shutout at Hancock Friday.

The victory improves the Eagles, currently ranked No. 5 in Class A, to 9-0.

So far in May, the Eagles have yet to go past five innings in a game due to scoring so many runs. In the last three games, the combined scores are NY Mills 38 and their opponents eight.

Head Coach Chris Bushinger cites effective pitching and taking advantage of the situations given as the two main factors in the team's recent success.

"Our pitchers have done such a good job this year of limiting free passes to the bases--very few walks allowed," Bushinger said. "I have to give credit to our defense--with runners on base I think we've done a pretty good job of making the plays in the field and recording the outs."

Brandon Kupfer, who adds a third potent arm to the mound for the Eagles, complimenting Adam Snelgrove and Tyler Patron, faced only 19 batters, fanning six and walking two for the victory. Kupfer pitched a two-hitter.

Eight of nine Eagle starters scored in the game.

Maison Roberts was 2-4 with a RBI and he scored twice. Kupfer was 2-4 aiding himself to victory with a run scored and two RBI.

As a team, NY Mills reached base on six free passes via base on balls.

"We've had a number of games this year where we've been issued quite a few walks--once those guys reach base they've come around to score," said Bushinger. "Really, we're just trying to take advantage of what's given to us."

NY Mills hosts Ashby Tuesday, May 8, in a 5 p.m. game at Smith Park.
