DETROIT LAKES -- This time of the golf season, for the past four years, has been when Perham senior Dan Cavanagh plays his best.

He did so again taking Medalist honors at the Section 8AA subsection golf meet at Headwaters Golf Course in Park Rapids by one stroke over Michael Herzog of Detroit Lakes.

Evan Arvig finished in a three-way tie for third shooting a 76, along with DL's Karter Smith and Tyler Baukol. Cavanagh carded a 74, Herzog a 75.

"My short game was on through 15 holes and I let a couple slip," Cavanagh said.

Cavanagh was on a path to a possible 71 and a statement three-stroke win over the four Lakers in the top-seven.

"Lot of pars, I didn't make a lot of birds," Cavanagh said. "Kind of fell apart at the end. Gave up two shots on the last hole and one on 17."

With defending 2A state champion Detroit Lakes in the section, a team trip to state will only happen if Perham can close the gap on a team scale.

Detroit Lakes won the meet by eight strokes over Perham 306-314. Fergus Falls was third shooting a combined 317.

Regardless, the way Cavanagh is playing makes him highly likely to make his fifth trip to Jordan and the state 2A meet coming up in mid-June.

"Looking forward to it," he said. "I'm more well prepared now then I have ever been."

Evan Arvig's impressive third place finish putting the top two Jackets ahead of all the Lakers, but Herzog, bodes well for Arvig to make a second consecutive trip to Jordan.

The next step is a big showdown at the Section 8AA Championship at Longbow Golf Course, June 4, in Walker.

DL, Perham and Fergus Falls will represent the south subsection.

Six individuals not finishing on qualifying teams also advance to Walker: Cody Cook and Andrew Cook from Hawley; Jordan Larson from Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton; Casey Bruggeman from Pelican Rapids; Jacob Goeden, of Wadena-Deer Creek and Austin Hagstrom from Breckenridge.

Perham's Toby Curtis tied for ninth place shooting an 80. Nick Kalina shot 84; Kyle Dykhoff carded an 87 and Thomas Huus scored 89.

The difference between the combined cards of Detroit Lakes and Perham shows room for a Yellowjacket upset.

Fergus Falls advanced with a 101 on their team card from their sixth golfer.

Every Perham golfer has to be on his game to make a move at the defending state champs from down highway 10.

DL's scores range from Herzog's 75 to Tanner Schnathorst's 89.

Perham's ranged from Cavanagh's 74 to Huus' 89.

Every stroke matters between two evenly matched teams.

Head Coach Jeff Tweeton, who will be absent from the Section meet at Longbow, has said a score of 300 is needed to beat DL.

With DL's 306 at the subsection meet, there is some room in that prediction.

According to Athletic and Activities Director Fred Sailer, Bob Cavanagh will be supervising the team in place of Tweeton for the section meet.
