Rachel Nelson qualifies for state golf meet

Perham junior Rachel Nelson fired an 88 at Longbow Golf Course in Walker at the Section 8AA championship meet to qualify for the 2012 Minnesota State golf tournament.

Nelson was the only Perham golfer on either the boys or girls teams to qualify. This will be her first appearance at Ridges of Sand Creek in Jordan, Minn.

Detroit Lakes ran away with the team title as the Lakers attempt a run at a state championship after finishing second last year.

The Lakers team score of 309 was an amazing 69 strokes better than second place Thief River Falls' 378.

Perham finished third with a score of 387.

Rebecca Huus scored 92; Destiny Mitchell carded a 98; Michaela Soule (109), Liz Sonnenberg (111), and Lexi Richter (114) rounded out the Yellowjacket scoring.

The Lakers took the top four individual spots.

Kate Smith was the meet medalist with a low score of 75. Natalie Roth shot 76. Trisa Hutchinson and Matty Tschider tied for third with 79.

Detroit Lakes followed up a 61-stroke victory at the subsection meet in Park Rapids last week.

Crookston's Monica Wold shot 82 to take fifth place, the first of the five non-Lakers to qualify for the state meet.

The other four state qualifiers were: Pelican Rapids' Alexa Bekkerus scored an 86. Nelson was next with her 88. Kelsey Schlenk of East Grand Forks qualified with a 90. Park Rapids Katie Kristofferson qualified with a 91, edging out Perham's Huus by one stroke.

The Class 2A state golf tournament will be held at Ridges of Sand Creek in Jordan, Minn., June 12-13.

Tee times will be posted on the Minnesota State High School League site (, later this week.
