Defending state champion Detroit Lakes won a meet that was closer than expected defeating Fergus Falls by five strokes to advance to the state golf tournament next week in Jordan, Minn.

The Otters were charging at the Lakers but a late two-stroke penalty on ruling of a plugged ball on an Otter secured the win for the Lakers.

Perham finished in third place with a score of 315.

The top two individual spots went to qualifiers not on contending teams.

Bagley's Aaron Leintz was the medalist with a low round of 71. Warroad's Casey Anderson was stroke back (72) in second place.

Austin Rusness and Karter Smith, Detroit Lakes' top scorers, finished third and fourth, respectively, with scores of 74 and 75.

The Otters low man, Keaton Lausch, shot a 75 to tie Smith and was the third state qualifier.

Which left two spots remaining to make the trip to Jordan next week.

Perham's Dan Cavanagh was looking for his fifth consecutive trip. Evan Arvig made his first appearance last season.

Crookston's Wyatt Hanson shot 76 to secure the fourth qualifying position. Roseau's Jared Strand took the fifth qualifying spot with a 77.

Four Yellowjackets finished within two strokes of Strand's 77.

Cavanagh and Arvig both carded a 78. Toby Curtis and Nick Kalina finished 18 holes in 79 strokes.
