DETROIT LAKES -- The Detroit Lakes Angels put a stranglehold on the Hi-10 West division after holding on to a 4-3 victory over Perham behind 13 strikeouts from starter Brock Johnson.

Johnson dueled with Perham starter Taylor Doll, both pitchers going the distance for their respective teams.

All the runs in the game were scored in the first two innings of play.

Perham got on the board in the top of the first when Tyler Doll scored on a one-out sacrifice fly to centerfield by Beau Bruhn.

The Angels took the lead back immediately in the bottom half of the first.

Taylor Fuhs doubled to lead off the game and scored on an error at second base on a hard ground ball hit by Bryan Buhr.

Buhr moved around the bags after a single by Phil Kirchner and scored from third base on a fielder's choice to shortstop by Mark Gulseth to put the Angels up 2-1.

The only two Perham batters Johnson did not strike out in the second inning, J.T. Laughlin and Gabe Pankonin, scored for Perham to retake the lead in the top of the second inning.

Laughlin reached on an error and moved to second on a past ball.

Pankonin burned Connor McLeod in right field lacing a double over his head to score Laughlin. Pankonin moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on a past ball for the 3-2 Pirates' advantage.

Trevor Tappe and Andrew Fondrick, the eight and nine hitters for the Angels, capped off the scoring in the bottom of the second.

Tappe singled and stole second base. Fondrick walked. Both batters moved into scoring position on a past ball.

Tapped scored on a sacrifice fly to left by Fuhs to tie the game. Buhr doubled to score Fondrick with the game-winner.

The rest of the game was fought on the hill.

By the end of the fifth inning, Johnson had retired nine of 15 Pirates via strikeout. He allowed Perham runners into scoring position in only two of the final seven innings - the sixth and seventh.

Brad Ellingson reached second base in the sixth with two out but was stranded there when Johnson took care of Laughlin on a come backer to the mound.

Perham loaded the bases in the seventh with one out but Johnson fanned Pirates' clean-up hitter Jesse Hein and induced a grounder to third base by big-hitting Beau Bruhn to end the threat.

The Pirates went down in order the final two innings.

The Angles loaded the bags in the eighth inning with none away but Taylor Doll worked out of the jam to keep the game at a one-run differential.

Johnson limited Perham's offensive production to the top four in the lineup. The bottom five batters combined to go 0-18 at the plate.

The line on Johnson was a complete game victory; he allowed three runs, two earned, walking only one batter and fanning a baker's dozen.

Johnson's only walk was to Gavin Biegler on a fourth ball that sailed over the Perham third baseman's helmet as he ducked to avoid the pitch.

Pankonin, Tyler Doll and Biegler all had two hits for Perham. Hein was 1-4.

Taylor Doll pitched a game of controlled ball taking the loss. He scattered nine hits, allowing four runs, two earned. Doll walked two and struck out five Angel batters.

Doll and the Pirates' defense stranded 10 Angels on the bases. Perham left seven men on base in the game.

Trevor Tappe led the Angels with three singles in four appearances in a productive night from the eighth batters' spot.

The victory improves Detroit Lakes' Hi-10 West record to 11-2. The loss drops Perham to 7-6.
