PERHAM -- The Bluffton Braves held a 1-0 lead for the opening half inning of play before the Perham Pirates put the game on ice by the fifth inning in an 8-3 opening round victory in Hi-10 League playoff action.

Jake Galbrecht doubled to score Dustin Geiser for the only Bluffton lead of the game.

The lead lasted one pitch.

Perham leadoff hitter Gabe Pankonin took the first pitch he saw from Geiser and launched it over the 358 sign in left-center at Matt's Field.

The game remained tied until the bottom of the third.

Pankonin doubled and scored on a base hit by Gavin Biegler to make the score 2-1.

Two batters later, Beau Bruhn launched a bomb of his own over the 329 sign in left field to score Biegler and push the lead to 4-1.

Pankonin scored his third run of the game in the fourth. He walked, moved to second on a past ball, took third on a wild pitch and scored on a Tyler Doll single.

Perham led 5-1.

Taylor Doll pitched six innings to gain the victory. He scattered five hits, allowing just the first-inning run and let his defense take care of the outs. Doll issued no walks and did not strike out a batter.

Geiser was the only Bluffton hitter to reach base from the second inning to the ninth and was pulled after three innings. He allowed four earned runs on six hits and fanned a pair.

Jonnie Schmitz relieved Doll on the mound and fanned four in two innings of work. He did not allow a Braves' base runner or a ball to leave the infield.

Perham tacked on their final trio of runs in the fifth. Eric Brauch, J.T. Laughlin and Brad Ellingson all scored.

Taylor Doll hit a two-RBI single to score Ellingson and Laughlin. Brauch scored after hitting a single and moving around the bases on two Bluffton errors for Perham's final runs of the game and an 8-1 lead.

Both errors were costly as they were made on routine infield plays that would have gotten Bluffton out of the fifth inning only down four runs, rather than seven, had the plays been made.

Biegler took the hill to close the game out in the ninth and imploded quickly allowing three walks, two runs and left the game with the bases loaded after recording one out.

Tyler Doll cleaned up the final two outs to preserve the win.

Kyle Geiser and Kyle Dykhoff scored for Bluffton in the final frame.

Pankonin and Bruhn led Perham each going 2-4 with a home run. Bruhn had two RBI, Pankonin one RBI and he scored three times.

Tyler Doll was 2-5 with a pair of singles and one RBI.

Taylor Doll was 1-3 with two RBI.

Galbrecht had a big 3-4 day with one RBI in a losing effort. He hit a double and two singles.

Dustin Geiser was 2-4 with a pair of singles.

Kevin Tumberg got the only other hit for Bluffton, a single in the first that was nullified when Pankonin threw out Galbrecht at the plate from right field to end the inning after fielding Tumberg's hit.

Pankonin was one of four Perham players to get two games in Friday. Jesse Hein, Eric Brauch and J.T. Laughlin joined him in a noon game in Detroit Lakes at the Legion Water Carnival Tournament.

The Perham Buzz lost that game 3-2 in extra innings to West Fargo.

The Perham Pirates move on to face the top-seeded Bertha Blazers, in Bertha, Saturday, July 21 at 5 p.m. The Blazers put up 18 runs in an 18-8 thrashing of Lake Park-Audubon.

Bluffton will host Lake Park-Audubon Saturday at 1:30 p.m. in an elimination game.

In other first round action, the New York Mills Millers upset Wadena-Deer Creek 8-2 and will travel to Audubon today, Saturday, July 21 to face the Detroit lakes Angels at 1:30 p.m. The Angels defeated Henning 10-0.
