Legion, Dist. 9, Div. II Johnson leads D-G-F to victory

HAWLEY, Minn. - Despite several rain delays, the second day of the Minnesota Division II, District 9 American Legion baseball was played.

And when it was all said and done, Stephen-Argyle and Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton each advanced to the next round of the winner's bracket with 4-2 and 2-1 wins, respectively.

"District playoffs, you gotta love it," said D-G-F pitcher Shawn Johnson, who went the distance only giving up one run, which was unearned. "I thought I did pretty good, still working on that first-pitch strike and trying to eliminate the walks."

Johnson was named the player of the game for his performance against Parkers Prairie, which helped send D-G-F to the next round.

"Shawn is absolutely our leader," said D-G-F head coach Allen Krueger. "He's unflappable when he gets on the mound and gets in those tight games. He really finds a way to get guys out, and often times he gets them out with strikeouts."

Johnson did stumble into a little bit of trouble in the top of the sixth inning after giving up back-to-back singles to Logan Riedel and Trey Thompson but escaped the inning unscathed with the help of a 6-4-3 double play.

"Well, the double play was probably the turning point in the game," said Krueger. "Our defense has been pretty good all weekend and it was good last weekend, and when you don't give up extra outs, that's helping us because in a game like that a couple extra outs and we lose."

Earlier in the day, Breckenridge was clinging to a one-run lead coming into the fifth inning, but two costly errors led to a four-run Stephen-Argyle outburst.

"We had one bad inning where we made a couple errors and hit two batters," Breckenridge head coach Steve Neppl said. "We just kind of let that one slip away."

Breckenridge outhit the Storm 10-7 but could not seem to muster a hit with runners in scoring position.

"We had guys on second and third in four innings and didn't score, and we hit into three double plays today," Neppl said.

Stephen-Argyle will face D-G-F today for the upper hand heading into the final round.

"It would be huge for us," Johnson said. "It's my last year for baseball pretty much and I would love to go to state again."
