NEW YORK MILLS -- The Carlos Cougars defeated the Perham Pirates for the second time in the Region 14C playoffs in a wild and sometimes ugly extra inning affair that ended with an 8-7 score.

Both teams scored in the tenth inning.

Cougars' first baseman Ryan Severson started a two-out rally in the top half with a base on balls.

Joe Snaza singled to move Severson up 90-feet and both runners advanced on a Kyle Dykhoff wild pitch.

Dykhoff was a Pirates' draftee from the Bluffton Braves.

Brad Nyberg singled to score Severson; Snaza took third base.

Neil Jenzen singled to score Snaza for an 8-6 lead and the half-inning ended when Ben Bruggeman flied out to right.

The Pirates answered with a one-out rally that led to the bases being loaded.

Taylor Doll reached on an error; Gabe Pankonin singled and Tyler Doll singled to load up the bags.

Gavin Biegler hit a sacrifice fly to right field to score Taylor Doll and Beau Bruhn came to the plate with the tying and winning runs on base.

Cougar's pitcher Matt Hoelscher induced a comebacker from Bruhn to the mound to retire the side and end the game 8-7.

Hoelscher was a lifesaver for the Cougars. He entered the game with one away in the bottom of the first inning and threw 9.2 innings of relief for the victory. He allowed three runs, all unearned, walked three and struck out six.

Snaza started the game on the mound but was chased early in an ugly first inning that gave Perham a 4-0 lead.

Snaza walked Eric Brauch after loading the bases, and then threw away a potential inning-ending 1-2-3 double play ball allowing Biegler and Tyler Doll to score.

To further Snaza's troubles, Brauch scored on a balk call with the bases juiced for the early 4-0 Perham lead.

Snaza gave way to Hoelscher after pitching 1/3 of an inning, allowing one hit, four runs and three walks. He faced six batters.

Carlos scored three in the fifth, answered with one run by Perham when Brauch scored his second run of the game to make it 5-3.

Carlos scored twice to tie the game at five in the sixth.

Both teams scored once in the eighth inning.

Dykhoff took the loss in relief of Taylor Doll.

Doll threw five innings allowing four runs.

Dykhoff pitched 4.2 innings, also allowing four runs. Both pitchers had five strikeouts.

Jack Stigman retired the last Cougar batter.

Severson was the star of the game on a 2-3 night at the plate with four RBI. Nyberg knocked in a pair going 3-4.

Tyler Doll had three hits for Perham. Biegler stole two bases.

10 errors were committed, six by Carlos, four by Perham.

The Cougars outhit the Pirates 12-7.

Carlos swept the Pirates by defeating Perham in the first round 8-1.
