Fergus Falls Hurricanes take Region 16C title

PERHAM -- The Fergus Falls Hurricanes (25-7) swept five of six games on their way to the Region 16C championship and a bye in the first round of the state tournament.

First round byes at state are new this year and granted to all Region champions in the 48-team, single elimination tournament. The Region runners-up also qualify but will play first round games.

The Hurricanes cruised through their first three games recording shutouts in each, including a second round monster victory over Wolf Lake 31-0 in seven innings.

The 'Canes opened with an 11-0 shutout of Osakis before suffering their only loss, 4-2 to the Midway Snurdbirds (26-6).

After a week break, Fergus put the hurt on Wolf Lake and eliminated Osakis 5-0 in the third round.

The only close ballgame of the 'Canes five victories was a 2-1 squeaker in 10 innings over Brandon-Evansville, which eliminated the Bluedogs and sent Fergus Falls to the finals for a rematch with Midway for the title.

Midway marched to the championship game with a 10-5 victory to eliminate Brandon-Evansville, after the opening round victory over Fergus Falls.

Midway received a first round bye and reached the title game on a 16-game win streak.

Tied after six innings of play, Fergus Falls scored five runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to seal the victory.

Dan Revering went 3-5 with two RBI and a run scored.

Bryan Jacklitch was 2-5 with two RBI and run scored.

Kyle Shaikoski pitched eight innings, allowing three earned runs, for the victory. He fanned six, walked three and allowed six hits.

Midway will face Shakopee in the first round, as the home team, at Joe Faber Baseball Stadium in St. Cloud. The game is scheduled for 4 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 19.

Fergus Falls will be the home team versus the winner of Richmond (15B) and Prior Lake (3C). That game will be played Saturday, Aug. 25 at 1:30 p.m. at Dick Putz Field in St. Cloud.
