State C Amateur Baseball Tournament: Snurdbirds advance, Blazers lose

SAINT CLOUD -- The field of baseball teams was trimmed to 32 over the weekend at the State Class C Tournament leaving three of the four regional teams alive.

Fergus Falls and Detroit Lakes earned byes by winning their respective Region tournaments, while Bertha and Midway battled in first round games.

The Midway Snurdbirds were the final game scheduled of the opening weekend of play and advanced with a 5-1 victory over Shakopee.

Leadoff hitter Zach Etter fell one home run short of hitting for the cycle in a 3-5 performance. He scored twice, stole a base and knocked in a run.

Shane Hendrickson had two RBI and scored one run.

Derek Dormanen and Steve Wetterling each knocked in a run making all five RBI come from the top four in the order.

Jake Lund pitched a complete game four-hitter to earn the victory.

Midway will take on Howard Lake on Sunday, August 26, 8 p.m., at Faber Field in St. Cloud.

The Bertha Blazers faced the Maple Plain Diamond Devils and fell in a close 3-2 defeat in a pitchers' duel.

The Devils scored once in the second and third innings to jump out to a 2-0 lead.

Bertha answered with tallies in the fourth and sixth innings, scored by Patrick Riewer and Jared Hoernberg to even the game at deuces.

Maple Plain did not allow the tie to last long scoring the game-winner in the top of the seventh for the 3-2 victory.

Both starting pitchers pitched complete games. Adam Gregg earned the victory allowing seven hits and two unearned runs. He fanned 14 Blazers while walking two.

Nate Hoelscher took the loss. He allowed four hits, walked three, beaned one and struck out a dozen in nine innings of work.
