It's back-to-back for the Silver Pirates after a great weekend of play at the 2012 State Championships.

Friday night the Silver lads downed Jordan in the semi-finals of class A by a score of 6-1. In the State Championship game on Saturday evening, the Pirates took on Union Hill on their home field and came away with a dominant 10-2 victory.

Perham got on the board in the second inning with two runs and never looked back in the victory over Jordan. Jim Nelson got things started as he reached on a fielders choice. Tim Studer promptly followed up with a single to left. With two out, Rob Litzau walked to load the bases for Tony Stoll - Stoll laced a single to right scoring Nelson and Studer and the Silver lads were off and running.

Jordan scored their lone run of the contest in the bottom of the sixth inning as they strung together singles before Greg Schmid (Perham's mound starter) closed the door with three consecutive strikeouts.

In the top of the seventh Perham slammed the door on Jordan scoring four runs to put the game on ice with a 6-1 lead. The Silver Pirates batted around in the seventh.

Jordan out-hit the Pirates 9-8 but Perham picked up seven free passes while Jordan got none. Perham got timely hits and that was not the case for Jordan.

Web Gem: Darrin Ovsak made a diving catch from his centerfield position to nail down the second out of the 5th inning a prevent a Jordan "Miller" rally with Perham holding a two run lead at the time.

Player of the Game: Greg Schmid gets the nod again as he is Mr. Reliable on the mound for the Silver Pirates. Schmiddy pitched 6 1/3 innings giving spreading around eight hits, allowing one run with five strikeouts and no walks.

Chad Griffin pitched the last 2/3 of an inning allowing one hit no walks and finished the game on a strikeout.

The win sent to the Silver lads to the Championship game for the second straight season as they would take on the Union Hill "Pitbulls" in Union.

Perham was three up and three down to start the game and Union Hill came to play. The Bulldogs stepped to the plate in the bottom of the first - they scored two runs on three hits and a pair of bases on balls and Perham found themselves in unfamiliar territory - they trailed.

Union Hill came to bat in the second and promptly put two on with a pair of singles. Manager Ron Litzau had a chat with his starting pitcher Tim Studer and decided to make a change (an unfamiliar position for Studer who was the winning pitcher in last weeks quarter-final game).

Chad Griffin assumed the mound duties and Studer became the Pirates right fielder. Griffin wasted no time taking charge - a ground out pitcher to first for one, a strikeout for number two and a fly ball to center for the third out and Union Hill left two runners stranded.

Perham started the top of the third with two up and two down before Rob Litzau got the fire going as he was hit by a pitch.

Tony Stoll picked up a two-out walk before Garry Grewe launched a double to the fence in right and Litzau crossed the plate to get the Pirates on the board.

Ron Litzau got a free pass to load the bases for Chad Griffin, who ripped the first pitch off the left field wall to clean the bases and Perham was up 4-2.

Perham came to bat in the fourth and the party continued - Jim Nelson walked, Tim Studer singled - another walk to Rob Litzau and the bases were loaded with one out. Tony Stoll singled to plate Nelson and the bases were still loaded. Garry Grewe hit a sacrifice fly to left scoring Studer - Ron Litzau then walked again to load the bases for (charged) Chad Griffin. Griffin drove a single to right scoring Rob Litzau and Stoll and the Pirates held a commanding 8-2 lead.

Perham added single runs in the 6th and 7th

Player of the Game: Chad Griffin as his numbers for six innings on the mound were - three hits, two walks and 11 strikeouts. His numbers at the plate weren't bad either as he was 2 for 4 with 5 RBI/

Web Gem: Garry Grewe played a solid second-base throughout the tournament!

Tournament Outstanding Player for the Pirates: Congratulations to Chad Griffin as he was 5 for 14 at the plate with 6 RBI's and picked up the win on the mound in the Championship game.

It was State Championship number two in as many years for the Silver Pirates as they came home with the Championship banner for Class A, the traveling trophy and received a baseball bat with each of the players names inked on the barrel. These items are all on public display at Perham's Chamber of Commerce.

Final note - thank you to the contingent of fans who ventured south to cheer on the team - it was much appreciated by the players.
