Volleyball: Barnesville sweeps Eagles 3-0

NEW YORK MILLS -- The Barnesville (8-2) volleyball team traveled to New York Mills winners of five of their past six matches and added another in the win column defeating New York Mills, handily, 3-0.

Set two continues to be somewhat of a conundrum for the Eagles, as they managed only eight points.

The scores by set were: 16-25, 8-25, 14-25.

In the Eagles Park Region Conference opener at Henning, a close 26-24 loss in the second set propelled the Hornets to a sweep of New York Mills, causing Head Coach Angela Paavola to project the idea that wins in the the second set, especially close games and avoiding blowouts, are important factors to the Eagles improving this season.

The loss to Barnesville evens the Eagles' record at 4-4-1, including tournament play.

"We seem to always have one bad game and it was game two," Paavola said.

Serve receive was a difference maker in the match, as Barnesville managed to get to every serve of the Eagles, allowing no aces.

In the important second game, serve receive was the major contributing factor to the lopsided score.

"When we can't pass the ball to our setter it makes it hard to get any kills," Paavola said.

New York Mills had only 15 kills out 80 attempts, but only made seven hitting errors, as a team.

"We must have hit the ball right where they (were) every time," said Paavola. "Tough match for us, but our subs came in and made some big plays, which will be important throughout the rest of the season."
