Volleyball: Hawley takes conference game in Perham 3-0

PERHAM -- Tuesday night was a rough night for area volleyball teams as both New York Mills and Perham were swept at home. Perham lost their second Heart O' Lakes Conference match in three attempts. Hawley defeated the Yellowjackets 3-0 (25-21, 28-26, 25-18).

Miscues were the downfall of the Yellowjackets. 13 hitting errors combined with 10 serving errors gave the Nuggets 23 points, almost a full game.

"Unforced errors are the difference in our wins/losses columns right now," Perham Head Coach Dan Christenson said.

Perham is 1-2 in the HOL and 5-10 overall, including tournament play.

After a brutal week of nearly constant competition, the Jackets have a week off before their next match at Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton next Tuesday.

"It's been a roller coaster these past six days," Christenson said. "We need a break and a chance to get back to practice."

Maria Rutten had a great night both front and back row against Hawley. The freshman outside hitter had eight kills, 15 digs, and three blocks.

"She is really maturing into her role, even though she is only a ninth grader."

Allie Christenson continues to move the ball effectively on offense. The junior had another career night tallying 30 assists.
