Cross Country teams at home Thursday, next Tuesday

One of the unique viewpoints for XC races in Perham are the moguls where fans can hear the pouding of racers feet approaching and sit adrift in the trail of dust in the wake of the pack. Robert Williams/FOCUS

Perham residents will have a special opportunity to see the cross country teams at home twice in one season. Perham hosts their Invitational Thursday, Oct. 4, at Arvig Park beginning at 4 p.m. The following Tuesday, Oct. 9, Perham is the site of this year's Heart O' Lakes Conference meet beginning at 4:30 p.m.

Cross country meets are intense. Rather than lasting an hour or two, the varsity meets are over in under 20 minutes of full-speed action. Perham's home course offers many different viewpoints to take in races, including the moguls, which are a rarity in the state.

Watching a meet is not like sitting in the bleachers with popcorn and a soda. To see more than the start and finishing line, fans are mandated to move along with the race. It is a flurry of human movement and Perham's home meets are always well-attended.

If you haven't experienced a cross country meet, here is a chance to check two of them out and in the process, cheer on the state and nationally-ranked home team.
