WARROAD -- Perham sophomore Natalie Murphy will represent the Perham/New York Mills swimming and diving team at state after qualifying in two events at the Section 8A Championships over the weekend.

Murphy has experience from last season to draw upon. She was part of the 200-medley relay team at state.

According to head coach Jennifer Huff, the Yellowjackets were the smallest team at the meet and managed to come away with a fourth place finish out of 10 teams.

"I'm so proud of (how) our girls swam Friday and Saturday in Warroad; we brought eight swimmers and one diver to the meet and six swimmers and (our) diver qualified for finals."

Murphy qualified for state in the 50 and 100-freestyle. She finished second in the 50-free to Jaelin Beachy of Staples-Motley. Beachy swam 24.71 to Murphy's 25.21.

In the 100-free, Bemidji's Steph Frey won the event in 54.13. Murphy swam 55.27 to finish runner-up. Both of Murphy's finishes set school records.

Two other school records were broken in Warroad.

Jackie Hanson shattered the 100-butterfly record. Hanson finished fourth with a new record time of 1:03.93.

The 200-freestyle relay record was dropped to 1:45.56 by Jackie Hanson, Lexi Richter, Annie Ingebrand, and Murphy.

"The girls swam with heart and left everything in that pool," Huff said. "Our 200 free relay was right in the thick of it."

The 200-relay team finished third missing a trip to state by one place.

The same fate came upon the 400-freestyle relay team (Hanson, Richter, Ingebrand, Murphy) who placed third.

"I'm so proud of how these girls came together and swam their best when it mattered most," said Huff. "It was my first year coaching and I couldn't have asked for a better sections meet. I know Natalie (Wrangham) and I couldn't be happier with these girls. We all left that pool with our heads held high and next weekend we will be cheering on Natalie at the state meet."

Perham finished ahead of Detroit Lakes by 2.5 points to take sole possession of fourth behind Bemidji, Park Rapids and Fergus Falls.

The Class A State Swimming and Diving Meet will be held Nov. 15-17 at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center in Minneapolis.
