Girls Basketball: Rangers keep Lady Jackets winless

CROSBY -- The Perham girls basketball team had another close one slip through they fingers as they fall to 0-8 for the season after a 56-42 loss to Crosby-Ironton.

In another close game, the Jackets had the lead in the first half up until the last couple minutes when a four of their six first half turnovers resulted in layups for the Rangers.

A 17-21 halftime score highlighted how close the game was being played, but didn't show how the Jackets outplayed the Rangers for the majority of the half.

A season-long shooting slump continues, as the Jackets missed many good, open looks but strong defense, especially on leading scorers Chelsey Bonsante and Shannon Lundgren, were the key factors in the Jackets strong play.

The second half continued with much of the same troubles that the Jackets have had in every close game they've played in this year.

Poor, costly turnovers led the easy buckets by the Rangers.

After committing only six turnovers in the first half, Perham threw or traveled the ball away 16 times in the second frame.

Almost all of those were unforced turnovers in situations that forced long stretches of scoring droughts.

Senior Susan Merkins came off the bench to provide a much-needed spark and played very well in the second half, applying pressure and forcing turnovers to pull the Jackets to within two points.

But a string of costly turnovers allowed the Rangers to build a lead and then ice it at the stripe, where they made 17 of 21 in the second half.

C-I also did a great job of keeping the ball in their best player's hands at the end, as their leading scorers made 17 free throws, while the Jackets defense held those two girls to 5 field goals.

It was another good effort but with fundamental breakdowns at key times, the Jackets' first win was still unattainable.

Sydney Roberts played with great intensity, rebounding well and providing energy for the team.

The Jackets continue their season with two games over break at Fergus Falls, starting with the first game against No.1-3A Fergus Falls on December 27.
