ST. PAUL -- The Class 2A Consolation Final nearly had the same ending as Perham's victory in the semis, but the Yellowjackets came out on the short end of a 33-30 defeat to Chisago Lakes Area.

The No. 10-ranked Yellowjackets finished in sixth place.

There were five lead changes, four after Chisago Lakes jumped out to a 12-0 lead.

Perham tied the match thanks to pins from Jacob Guehna at 126 pounds and Dylan Perrine at 132 pounds. Both pins came in the first period to tie the score at 12.

Luke Sailer pinned Kyle Merry at 1:01 to bump Perham's lead to 18-15. Colin Neitzke produced a late flurry of points after trailing for two periods to defeat Carson Velaski 7-5 and the lead grew to 21-15.

Brady Sazama's match at 160 was all over the mat. Sazama led 5-0 after one period. Mark Sontag scored five of his own to tie the match after two. Both wrestlers had time on their backs in the third, including a ferocious slam by Sazama which the referee ruled out of bounds. Sontag stormed back late for a 10-7 win cutting the Perham lead to 21-18.

Joe Virga tweaked a knee early in the 170 pound match with Perham's Cole Schmitz. Virga was attended to and returned to pin Schmitz at 3:08 to give the lead back to Chisago Lakes 24-21.

William Parks may have been Perham's most valuable wrestler on the day going 3-0 and giving Perham the lead right back with a 3:12 pin of Mike Sampson. Perham led 27-24.

Jesse Klatt lost a tough match at 195 and with Cody Nylander and Jesse Bucholz to go the match was tied at 27.

Nylander joined Parks with an undefeated day taking a hard-fought 6-1 decision over Daniel Sargeant. Nylander scored four of the six points in the third period. He led 2-0 after one and 2-1 after four minutes.

Sophomore Jesse Bucholz sent Perham to the consolation finals with a must-win in the semis and was called upon to hold Perham's 30-27 lead against Jonah Westbury, a senior, and the No. 4 ranked heavyweight in Class 2A. Westbury pinned Bucholz at 1:15 to give Chisago Lakes Area the three-point victory.

Kasson-Mantorville defeated Simley 30-27 to capture the Class 2A wrestling team title. Foley defeated New Prague 33-24 for third place.

According to the Minnesota State High School League's John Millea, 14 Kasson wrestlers were stuck in an elevator for more than an hour prior to state title match.

Bucholz pin sends Perham to Consolation Finals

With Perham's season on the line, sophomore heavyweight Jesse Bucholz took to the mat against fellow sophomore Tony Sieve, of Adrian, with Perham clinging to a 27-25 lead.

Bucholz pinned Sieve at 1:41 to assure Perham of advancing to the State 2A Consolation Finals, which will take place at 5 p.m. against Chisago Lakes Area.

Perham trailed the entire match until Cody Nylander won a 10-4 decision over Adam Garms to give the two-point advantage to Bucholz.

"As Cody's match progressed, I just tried to put some more confidence in my head and give it all I got," Bucholz said.

Bucholz was visibly nervous at the start of the 225-pound match but had calmed before taking the mat with the season on the line.

"I thought it was going to come down to heavyweight - pin or be pinned," Perham Head Coach Robb Moser said. "You just can't count on a heavyweight match going six minutes."

Other Yellowjackets getting wins in the match were:

Sam Pirrotta 7-3 over Ryan Elias.

Jacob Guehna 8-6 in overtime over Michael Pruess.

Luke Sailer 7-1 over Hunter Heitkamp.

Brady Sazama won by fall at 4:21 over Justin Elias.

William Parks won by fall at 3:16 over Andy McCann.

Perham won the final four matches to advance. Sazama, Parks and Nylander are all undefeated (2-0) on the day.

In Class A, Jackson County Central moves to the championship match with a 39-25 win over Chatfield. JCC will face Frazee, which beat Sibley East 40-16. The Championship matches will begin at 7 p.m.
