Boys track third at Section 8AA True team

DETROIT LAKES — The Perham 4x800m relay team missed setting the Section 8AA True Team meet record by one-half second and three Perham individuals won events leading the Yellowjackets to a third place finish Tuesday.

Nick Carignan, Keeghan Hurley and Brady Speicher swept the distance runs with a fellow teammate in tow accumulating 116 of Perham's 448.5 total points in three races.

Carignan and Hurley finished one-two int he 800m, Carignan clocking in at 2:03.85, Hurley at 2:04.61. Hurley and Speicher did the same in the 1600m run with Hurley winning in 4:25.36 to Speicher's 4:29.89. In the 3200m, Speicher won the event as one of only two runners to finish under the 10-minute mark. Speicher's time of 9:58.26 nipped Connor Danielson of Fergus Falls, who finished second in 9:59.70. Perham's Billy Beseman was third in 10:05.19.

Dalton Dahms and Leighton Covington added 27 team points with fifth (53.47) and 10th place (55.37) finishes, respectively.

Sophomore Andrew Johnson scored 19 points with a second place finish in the 110m hurdles, 17.42, fractions of a second behind winner Garrett Horejsi of Little Falls (17.08). Johnson added a ninth place finish in the 300m hurdles (45.65), one place behind senior Mark Heubsch in eighth place (45.14). 

In the relays, behind the near record setting 4x800m team's first place finish (8:18.87), the 4x100 finished sixth; the 4x200 fifth, and the 4x400 in third place behind Detroit Lakes and East Grand Forks. First place in relays is worth 30 team points. The Yellowjackets totaled 87 points in the four races. They were outdone by True Team champion Detroit Lakes, who scored 108 points with finishes of fourth, first, first and second in the relays. 

Detroit Lakes captured the title with 533 points. Little Falls was second with 525. Perham's third place total of 448.5 was well ahead of fourth place East Grand Forks (70) and Roseau (343.5). Fergus Falls, Pequot Lakes, Bagley/Fosston, Park Rapids Area and Thief River Falls rounded out the 10-team field.

In the field events, Speicher scored again gaining 16 points with a fifth place high jump of five-feet, eight-inches. Eli Beachy earned 15.5 points with a fifth place pole vault of 12-feet. Beachy tied with Braden Stoot of Roseau.

James Vana finished seventh in the long jump clearing 18-feet, 4.5-inches.

Jonathon Siira captured Perham's highest field event score with a second place shot put of 47-feet, 9.75-inches. Pequot Lakes' Travis Jacobsen was the only lengthier shot at 49-feet, 5.5-inches. In discus, William Parks finished in sixth with a throw of 120-feet, one-inch. Siira was 12th at 108-11.
