Perham and NY Mills win in opening round of softball playoffs

The Perham Yellowjackets advanced to the second round of the 8AA playoffs with a win on the road over the Panthers in Park Rapids.

In Section 8AA softball playoffs, the No. 6-seeded Perham Yellowjackets pulled a mild upset over No. 3 Park Rapids by a score of 10-4 in Park Rapids in the opening round. The two teams met last week and split a doubleheader in Perham.

In the corresponding bracket, No. 2 Fergus Falls defeated No. 7 Pelican Rapids 9-1. Fergus Falls and Perham will meet in Frazee, Thursday, May 23 at 4 p.m.

No. 4 Hawley defeated No. 5 Detroit Lakes 3-1 and advance to face No. 1 Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton. The Rebels shutout No. 8 Breckenridge 15-0.

Game recap:

Perham got the scoring started third inning with the top of the order. Brittany Miller and Annie Ingebrand walked, and Syd Roberts was able to get a bunt down to move the runners over. Allie Doll squeaked one through the middle, and Kawlewski came through with a base hit to score a couple of runs.  The Jackets rally ended there, making the score 2-0.

Park Rapids answered quickly, getting the first two runners on via walk and a hit by pitch. With one away, what looked to be a text book ground ball turned into an error that pushed two runs across to tie the score. After a strikeout, the Jackets tried a pick-off play at third base and the ball floated just inches away from Ivy Honer, leading to Park Rapids’ third run of the inning.

Perham rallied in the fourth, as Megan Leslie walked, Doll singled, and Kawlewski walked to load the bases. Senior Ivy Honer ripped a double that was misplayed by the left fielder. Kawlewski trotted into third and as the throw came in it went wide and out of play, resulting in a two-base ruling that allowed Honer to score.

Morgan Byer continued the rally with a two-strike single. Perham scored six in the inning to put up a 8-3 lead before tacking on some more insurance with two runs in the seventh.

Park Rapids loaded the bases in their final at-bats, but only pushed one run across for the 10-4 final. Allie Doll pitched a complete game for the victory allowing four runs, one earned. She fanned five and walked five.
