Perham boys track team runs away from field at Region 6A Subsection

PERHAM — The Perham boys track team used six victories and strong finishes in 18 of 19 events to capture the title at the Region 6A Subsection track and field meet held in Perham, Thursday, May 23.

Junior Keeghan Hurley swept the 1600 and 3200-meter runs to lead Perham.

Dalton Dahms was in on two event wins taking the 800m run, one second faster than teammate Nick Carignan, and as part of the winning 4x800m relay team, along with Billy Beseman, Carignan and Brady Speicher.

The 4x800 was a blowout from the beginning with Beseman pushing Perham out to a healthy lead and Dahms and Carignan handing over to Speicher, who finished a lap up on a number of teams. The 4x800 winning time from Perham of 8:10.25, was nearly a minute over second place Ottertail Central’s 9:04.59.

Leighton Covington added a win in the 400m dash in a time of 53.46. Cole Schmitz continued the revolving door of who is Perham’s best pole vaulter with a clearing vault of 12-feet, eight-inches. Eli Beachy finished third at 11-08 and Patrick Glynn finished sixth at 09-02 giving the Yellowjackets three of the top six pole vault finishes.

Hurley finished his two race wins with fellow teammates on his heels. Hurley won the 1600 in 4:23.56. Teammates Jayden Cullen (4:37.88) and Ben Sullivan (4:57.70) were second and fifth, respectively. Cody Bekkerus of Pelican Rapids finished runner-up to Hurley in the 3200m by a fraction over two seconds. Hurley’s winning time was 9:57.82, the only finisher under 10 minutes. Bekkerus finished in 10:01.19. Speicher and Beseman were third and fourth around the 10:17 mark. Mark Huebsch added a runner-up finish in the 300m hurdles (42.46) behind OTC’s Collin Dague (41.09). The 4x100 relay team of Payton Jordahl, Beachy, Schmitz and James Vana were second (47.32) to Breckenridge/Campbell-Tintah’s foursome, who won the event in 45.25. Huebsch, Covington, Carignan and Dahms were second in the 4x400 relay (3:35.84) to Pelican Rapids’ winning time of 3:32.40.

Qualifiers will race at the Region 6A meet Thursday, at Minnesota State University - Moorhead beginning at 11 a.m. The top five Subsection individuals in each event, along with qualifiers by specific times and the top two relays all advance to Moorhead.
