Baseball: Perham advances to Section final

CROOKSTON —  Austin Erickson nailed down the save as Perham defeated Roseau 5-3 Thursday completing a rain-suspended game and advancing undefeated to the Section final, to be played today at 4 p.m. in Crookston.

Roseau loaded the bases in the bottom of the fifth, but Erickson ended the inning with a strikeout. Perham added an insurance run in the sixth. Eric Brauch walked and moved to third on two past balls. Joey Lindberg laid down the squeeze bunt to score Brauch for the 5-3 lead.

Roseau brought the tying run to the plate in their last at-bats, but Erickson stranded the runner at first base. In 2.1 innings of relief, Erickson fanned five Rams, walked one, to pick up the save. Jack Stigman is credited with the pitching victory.

The winner of Roseau and Thief River Falls will need to defeate Perham twice to advance to the state tournament, while Perham needs only one win. A loss in the 4 p.m. game will move the section final to Friday.


Tuesday: Rain suspended play between the No. 3 Perham Yellowjackets (14-5) and No. 4 Roseau Rams (12-8) in the semifinals of Class 2A Section 8 baseball playoffs at Jim Karn field Tuesday evening.

Roseau will face Thief River Falls/Goodridge in an elimination semifinal at 2 p.m.

The teams left the field with Perham leading 4-3 in the bottom of the fifth inning. Roseau has runners on the corners and two outs.

Nick Ferguson and Alex Halstensgard got Roseau on the board in the first inning scoring unearned on two Perham errors.

Sam Miller scored from third base on a possible inning-ending double play not in time in the third inning to put Roseau up 3-0.

Perham loaded the bases in the fourth and walks to CJ Mulcahy and Eric Brauch brought in two runs to cut the lead to one run.

Perham took the lead in the fifth by way of a two out rally.

Jaden Meyer doubled, followed by Luke Sailer’s third single of the game, which scored pinch runner Jake Lueders with the tying run. Sailer gave Perham their first lead of the game, 4-3, scoring from third base on a wild pitch.

When play resumes Thursday, Corey Olson and Alex Ziegler will be on first and third base. Sam Miller is the next scheduled batter for the Rams.

Jack Stigman pitched 4.2 innings for Perham and was on the mound when the game was called.

Roseau starter Jacob Eaton pitched 4.2 innings for Roseau. Aaron Krahn faced one batter to end the top half of the fifth. 

Perham got three hits in the second inning, but failed to score as Joey Lindberg was gunned down on a throw from left field while trying to score on a single by Josh Still.

Earlier Tuesday, Thief River Falls/Goodridge eliminated Detroit Lakes 9-3. The Prowlers then eliminated Crookston 2-1. Crookston took out Park Rapids 6-1.

Thief River Falls awaits the loser of Perham and Roseau. The winner of Perham/Roseau will advance to the Section final and will need to be beaten twice to be eliminated.
