Yellowjackets knock off section foe in season opener

The Perham Yellowjackets have felt comfortable at the Crookston High School gymnasium the past two seasons. Last year, the Yellowjackets walloped the Pirates to open the season. This year, the Yellowjackets came away with a 62-40 victory over Crookston in their 2017-18 season opener on Dec. 1.

While the score wasn’t as lopsided as last year’s meeting, the result was the same. The Yellowjackets used stifling defense, holding Crookston to just 18 second half points as they pulled away for the win.

The Pirates finished with more 3-pointers made than two-point baskets in the game. They hit eight 3-pointers and just four 2-pointers, finishing 12 of 34 from the field.

Martin LaFond and Jenson Beachy led the way for the Yellowjackets. LaFond finished with 16 points, while Beachy added 15.

The Yellowjackets had a commanding edge on the glass, out-rebounding Crookston 34-17. Beachy and Josh Jeziorski had five rebounds each, while Tanner Knutson grabbed four. Dawson Stevens, LaFond, John LaFond, Seth Johnson, Carter Cresap and Logan Richter had three boards each in a full team effort on the glass.

The Yellowjackets used a 14-5 run to break open the game at the end of the first half. They lead 18-17, before closing out on the run, leading 32-22 at the break. The Yellowjackets continued to pull away with a pair of runs late in the second half, eventually outscoring the Pirates, 30-18.

The Yellowjackets return to the road on Tuesday, Dec. 5 when they travel to Little Falls to take on the Flyers at 7:30 p.m.
