Yellowjackets earn conference win over Hornets

The Perham Yellowjackets used a strong second half in holding off the Frazee Hornets 59-51 on Dec. 12 at the Prairie Wind Middle School gymnasium in Heart O’Lakes Conference girls basketball action.

The Hornets held a two point lead at the half, 33-31, but the Yellowjackets shut down the Hornets in the second half, holding them to just 18 points.

The Yellowjackets were able to take advantage of the Hornets cooling off in the second half. The Yellowjackets outscored the visitors by 10 points in the decisive half.

Mesa Schultz recorded the double-double for the Yellowjackets. She finished with 10 points and grabbed 12 rebounds. Aixa Kolofale finished in double figures as well, finishing with 10 points. Lacy Richter led all Perham scorers, finishing the game with 12 points. The Yellowjackets hit six 3-pointers in the win, with Richter hitting two of them.

Schultz had a big second half for the Yellowjackets, scoring all 10 of her points in the second half.

The Hornets were led in scoring by Paige Oswald. She finished with a game high of 16 points, scoring 11 of them in the first half as the Yellowjackets slowed her down in the second half. Paige Ziegler added 11 points, while Aina Olson added 13 for the visitors.

The Yellowjackets are now 3-1 overall on the season and 2-1 in the Heart O’Lakes Conference. They take to the road for a pair of games, starting on Friday, Dec. 15 when they take on the Hawley Nuggets in an HOL battle at 7:30 p.m. in Hawley. The Yellowjackets will travel to Wadena-DC on Tuesday, Dec. 19 to take on the Wolverines in a non-conference tilt.
