First half run helps Perham past Barnesville

The Perham boys basketball team will carry a perfect record into the third annual Grand8 Holiday Classic after securing a 46-38 victory over Barnesville on Dec. 21 at the Prairie Wind Middle School gymnasium.

Jenson Beachy led the way for the Yellowjackets. He finished with 17 points, including three 3-pointers in the win. Martin LaFond and Josh Jeziorski finished with 12 points each in the win for the Yellowjackets.

The Yellowjackets jumped out to an 8-2 lead, keyed by 3-pointers from Beachy and LaFond. However, Barnesville answered with a 6-0 run of its own, evening the game at eight. Jeziorski answered for Perham with four straight points and the Yellowjackets would not relinquish the lead. Barnesville evened the game at 17, but Perham closed on an 11-2 run, taking an 28-19 lead into the break.

The Trojans did just enough to hang around, yet couldn’t catch the Yellowjackets. They outscored Perham in the second half, but the Yellowjackets were able to maintain their first half lead throughout the second half.

The Yellowjackets struggled with turnovers, committing 17 of them in the contest, while Barnesville had 14. The Yellowjackets maintained an edge on the boards, out-rebounding Barnesville 24-17.

The Trojans were led by Charle Aakre and Sam Askegaard’s team high of nine points.

Jeziorski finished with 12 points and grabbed nine rebounds for the Yellowjackets. LaFond hit three 3-pointers and had three steals. Jeziorski and Richter had three steals as well, while Beachy led with six.

Perham improves it’s season mark to 7-0 and 3-0 in the Heart O’Lakes Conference. The Yellowjackets return home for the annual Grand8 Holiday Classic when they host the Anoka Tornadoes in the opening round. The Yellowjackets and the Tornadoes tip off on Wednesday, Dec. 27 at 6:30 p.m. It will be the fourth game of four high school basketball games taking place that day. The tournament concludes on Thursday, Dec. 28.
