Yellowjackets come up short in 46-43 defeat
A furious second half comeback by the Perham Yellowjackets could not quite catch East Grand Forks Saturday night in a 46-43 Section 8AA decision at the Concordia Fieldhouse.
Perham' s season ended when Freshman Katie Johnson's three-pointer to tie the game hit the front of the rim as the final buzzer sounded.
The No. 2-ranked Yellowjackets, who were coming off a 76-51 win Thursday in a game with South Sub-Section 8AA foe Staples-Motley, lost their second-leading scorer in the first half when Mesa Schultz collided with an East Grand Forks player and had to leave the game. Schultz was never able to return.
"She was wobbling and dizzy," Perham Head Coach T.J. Super said.
The Green Wave, ranked No. 3 in the north half of Section 8AA, were able to put up 23 first half points for an eight-point lead at the half.
"It was tough in the first half," Super said. "East Grand Forks just did a good job defensively of stretching the court."
Lisa Meder and Gabby DeBoer combined for 11 of Perham's 15 first half points.
DeBoer, a senior who broke the 1,000-point career scoring plateau in Perham's first round victory over Staples-Motley, found herself carrying her club offensively in the second half. DeBoer tallied 16 second half points to finish the night with a game-high 21.
With DeBoer leading the attack, the Yellowjackets served early notice on the Green Wave that a different Perham team was on the court. The Jackets closed the lead to three with a seven-point scoring surge.
The Green Wave were able to rebuild a 40-30 lead with a seven-point run of their own but the relentless DeBoer made it a 44-43 game with 1:18 left. East Grand's Breanna Olson made the second of two foul shots with 48.7 seconds left to give the Green Wave a 45-43 lead. When DeBoer fouled Breanna Olson with 10.5 seconds left, she gave East Grand their winning three-point advantage.
The Yellowjackets out-scored the Green Wave 28-23 in the second half.
Super praised DeBoer for her second half play.
"She played really well," Super said. "We put a lot on her shoulders."
DeBoer knew what she had to do in the second half to give her team a chance to win.
"I knew I had to step up so when the ball was in my hands I pushed," DeBoer said.
The Yellowjackets saw their season end at 14-14.
"We fought hard," DeBoer said. "It's tough to go out this way but we fought hard until the buzzer sounded."
Mae Aitchison and Haley Burger were high pointers for the Green Wave with 12 and 11 points respectively.
The Green Wave improved to 22-5.
