Power Works Gym owner wins world deadlift title

RENO, Nevada — Tom Haggenmiller, of Perham, deadlifted 442 pounds to win the 198-pound Masters Class world deadlift championship at the Peppermill Resort, Spa and Casino.

Haggenmiller weighed in at 192 pounds and improved on a third place finish last year.

“This year the competition was a little easier,” Haggenmiller said.

480 lifters from 10 countries participated in the event, which features the world’s best deadlifters, along with the bench press competition.

Haggenmiller improved in the bench, as well. He placed second, up from fourth in 2012.

Powerlifting has been a life-changing event for the Perham gym owner. He began lifting in high school and has continued for more than 30 years.

“You don’t need aspirations of competing in powerlifting, but when you’re moving a couch, carrying your luggage or picking up your kid, strength is important and makes life easier,” Haggenmiller said.

Power Works Gym is located at 949 West Main Street in Perham next to Northwoods Church.
