Perham's Logan Richter to grayshirt for the Golden Gophers
Perham senior and University of Minnesota football commit Logan Richter plans to grayshirt for the Golden Gophers, according to the Richter family.
Prior to his senior season, Richter verbally committed to the Golden Gophers on March 25 after a junior day visit to the University.
Richter made the announcement on National Signing Day, which is the day high school recruits make their verbal commitments official.
College programs have multiple options they can offer to a recruit besides the typical redshirt. Grayshirting is one of the options college coaches can use, according to an article by Kevin Trahan of SBNation, A grayshirt is when a team offers a player enrollment on scholarship at the start of the second semester, after the upcoming season. The recruit then has five years to play four seasons, with the ability to redshirt at some point.
Richter plans to attend college in the fall, enrolling as a part-time student, preventing his eligibility clock from starting. He would then enroll during the winter semester of 2019 and would become a full-time student on scholarship.
Richter finished his senior season with 35 tackles in eight games played. He led the team with 13 tackles for a loss, totaling 52 yards. He finished with two sacks and forced teams to gameplan for his presence along the defensive line. Richter started his high school career as a sophomore when he totaled 20 tackles in eight games, three of which were for a loss. He followed it with strong junior season, finishing with 43 total tackles in eight games and leading the Yellowjackets with eight tackles for a loss.
