Sartell/Sauk Rapids came out flying and scored four first period goals to snap a two-game Laker win streak 5-1 Thursday night in girls hockey at Kent Freeman Arena.
The Storm’N’Sabres scored all four early goals in two separate spans of less than a minute.
Madison Mollner gave the visitors a 1-0 lead at 5:19; 44 seconds later, Maggie Kulus scored on a rebound at 6:03.
Brooke Walters and Grace McCabe scored back-to-back quick goals at 8:31 and 9:20 to lead 4-0 midway through the period and force a timeout call from DL head coach Gretchen Norby.
The teams played to a stalemate in the back half of the period and ended up even on shots 9-9.
Walters notched her second goal of the game 42 seconds into the second period to go up 5-0.
The Lakers got a power play on a hooking call on McKenna Rohe early in the second period but could not get set up to pressure the net in the offensive end.
DL got a second power play opportunity when Walters was called for holding at 5:33 but the Storm'N'Sabres held.
The Lakers improved their play in the final period with a number of opportunities.
Anna Payne had the best scoring chance on a breakaway early in the third period but was stopped by a waffle save from netminder Chloe Stockinger.
Emma Coley had a strong chance deflected over the net at the 10-minute mark.
Payne knocked the shutout off the board scoring amidst a scrum in the goalmouth at 13:26 with assists credited to Madyson Melgard and Karrigan Hallisey for the 5-1 final.
The Lakers had the advantage in shots on goal 37-30.
Sartell/Sauk Rapids improves to 3-2-1 while DL falls to 3-6 with a week off before a return to Mid-State action against Prairie Centre (2-2) Thursday, Dec. 7. The stop is the fourth in a stretch of five games in nine days for the Blue Devils.
