Junior goalie Blake Itzen picked up his first varsity career victory and Detroit Lakes notched its first win of the season in a 3-2 triumph on the road over Northern Lakes Tuesday night.
Trey Seebold gave the Lakers a 1-0 lead on the only goal of the first period at 7:08 on assists by Jace Kovash and Ben Unruh.
The Lakers outshot the Lightning in every period of play leading to a 30-18 advantage by the end of the game.
Northern Lakes struck swiftly in the opening minute of the second period taking a 2-1 lead on goals by Kasey Couture and Shane Donovan 35 seconds apart.
Jackson Carlblom scored the tying goal at 13:55 unassisted.
The Lakers killed three separate power plays in the second period and a five-on-three in the third period after Jackson Fields scored the game-winner with the man advantage in the opening 30 seconds of the final frame on a Seebold assist.
The teams played four minutes of four-on-four on coincidental minors at 5:02 and 9:08.
Itzen made 16 saves to notch his first win in goal. Wyatt Fink stopped 27 of DL’s 30 shots.
Seebold had a goal and an assist to lead the visitors. Donovan and Couture matched the effort to lead the Lightning.
DL snapped a four-game skid to improve to 1-4 and 1-0 in the Mid-State Conference. The Lakers continue conference play Friday against Prairie Centre at home. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
