Payton Madison recorded a hat trick to lead the River Lakes Stars to a 4-1 victory over Detroit Lakes in non-conference boys hockey action at Kent Freeman Arena Saturday afternoon.
Despite being outshot 31-10 and outscored by two goals through two periods of the play, the Lakers could not contain Madison, who scored twice in the third period to ice the game.
Madison’s second of the game came in the opening five minutes of the final period at even strength for a 3-0 lead. Jace Kovash scored DL’s only goal at the 10-minute mark on the power play with assists by Jackson Fields and Collin Ginnaty.
Madison added a shorthanded goal less than five minutes later.
Blake Itzen had a strong night in net making 40 saves in a losing effort.
Jonathan Terwisscha stopped 12 of DL’s 13 shots on goal as River Lakes moved to a game from .500 at 10-11 overall.
The loss snaps a four-game Laker winning streak. DL fell to 10-11-1 overall heading into a Mid-State Conference game versus Northern Lakes (4-18, 3-4) Thursday, Feb. 8. The Lakers have clinched the conference title and defeated the Lightning 3-2 in Pequot Lakes 3-2 in early December.
