Perham/NYM swimmers improve at Park Rapids Area
The Perham/New York Mills boys swimming team returned to the pool with a meet at Park Rapids Area. The Panthers won the dual meet 105-57 over the Yellowjackets. The Yellowjackets were without the services of a pair of experienced swimmers, but continued to make strides and saw improvement from their younger swimmers.
According to assistant coach Jensen Maiden, the Yellowjackets cut 88.31 seconds off of their total time, while setting 33 new personal records. She said eight of those featured significant time cuts.
“All in all, we’re very excited about how the team is doing,” Maiden said. “Considering we had two of our older boys out, we are particularly pleased with how our younger half of the team stepped up. We’re continuing to work on technique and endurance, as those seem to be the factors holding us back at this time.”
The Yellowjacket 200 medley relay team of Kevin Swanson, Duncan Skorup, Gavin Kehoe and Kyle Swanson finished second with a time of two minutes and 8.62 seconds.
The 200 freestyle relay team of Kyle Swanson, Gavin Kehoe, Jett Karels and Duncan Skorup came in second place with a time of 1:54.11.
The Yellowjackets captured first place honors in the 100 backstroke, 100 breaststroke and the 400 freestyle relay. The Panthers elected to swim those races in exhibition, not accruing points or places towards the final score.
Kevin Swanson finished first in the 100 backstroke, finishing with a time of 1:18.59. Duncan Skorup was first in the 100 breaststroke at 1:19.78. The team of Kevin Swanson, Luke Becker, Max George and Jett Karels came in with a time of 5:00.75.
The Yellowjackets will be put to the test on Friday, Jan. 12 when they travel to Bemidji to compete in the Bemidji Invitational. It will be the second meet this week for the Yellowjackets and third in a span of eight days.
