Familiar foe awaits Perham at Class AA Championships

The Perham Yellowjackets are no strangers to the mats at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul, Minn. Either are their opponents. For the third straight year, the Yellowjackets will open the Class AA Team Tournament against the Foley Falcons when they kick off the quarterfinals on Thursday, March 1.

The Falcons advanced with a 29-26 victory over Litchfield in the Section 6AA Championship on Feb. 17.

The Yellowjackets will be looking for a measure of revenge. The Falcons have defeated the Yellowjackets in the last two quarter final meetings. In 2017, Foley defeated Perham 32-23 and in 2016 they edged Perham, 33-18.

The team's have met the last three years at the state championships with Perham holding a 1-2 mark. The Yellowjackets captured their first of three straight consolation championships with a 30-26 victory over the Falcons.

Leighton Rach, Dylan Fudge and Zach Peterson wrestled in that match and have quite the experience wrestling against Foley, they have faced the Falcons three times during their wrestling career.

Ty Moser and Gabe Bellefeuille have experience as well against the Falcons, having wrestled in two of the three meetings.

Kasson-Mantorville earned the No. 1 seed and enters competition with a 22-0 mark. They will open up with Totino-Grace. Scott West earned the No. 2 seed and will take on Grand Rapids in the opening round. Fairmont/Martin County West earned the No. 3 seed and will square off with South St. Paul.

The quarterfinal round matches are set for 11 a.m. on March 1 with the semifinals beginning at 1 p.m. The Class AA championship is set for 7 p.m. All matches take place at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul.
