FRAZEE — The No. 10AA Perham wrestling team won two of three matches for a fifth place finish at the Les Kertscher Duals Saturday.

Five of the eight teams were ranked, including the eventual champions, No. 1AA Foley. The Falcons defeated No. 2A Frazee 36-29 in the title match.

Lake Crystal-Wellcome Memorial defeated No. 10A Minneota for third place.

Perham’s only defeat was to LC-WM in the opening match 40-30. Perham knocked off No. 2B (N.D.) Lisbon 39-31 in the consolation semifinals and defeated Holdingford handily in the fifth place match 49-18.

Lake Crystal-Wellcome Memorial led the entire match in the quarters after jumping out to a commanding 31-6 lead on three pins, a tech fall and two major decisions. Ben Nelson was the only Perham wrestler to get a win in the first six matches with a pin of Caleb Davis at 120 pounds in 33 seconds.

Nelson was one of three undefeated Yellowjackets at the tournament, along with William Parks and Jesse Bucholz.

Colin Neitzke and Patrick Glynn had back-to-back wins by fall at 152 and 160 to pull Perham within 13 points at 31-18.

Dalton Elliot won a 5-1 decision over Cole Schmitz; 34-18 LC-WM.

Parks pinned Andrew Radke at 3:31 to pull the Jackets within 10 points with three matches to go at 34-24.

Ari Harnitz put the match out of reach with an 11-4 decision over Jesse Klatt. Shane Nelson won a decision over Trent Jahnke 2-0 for LC-WM’s final points.

Bucholz pinned Ben Gilman at heavyweight in 21 seconds for the 40-30 final.

In the consolation semis, Bucholz was charged with preserving the win against a top five North Dakota wrestler in Dylan Claus. Claus was the fifth place finisher at 285 at the 2013 N.D. state championships.

Perham led 36-31 and the duo went the distance with Bucholz hanging on to a 3-2 decision to give Perham the 39-31 victory. Bucholz has come up big in pressure situations before. He sent Perham to the consolation finals of last year’s state tournament with a pin in a must-win situation.

Nelson made it a two-for-two day with his second pin, a 1:07 fall over Jordan Urbach, again getting Perham on the scoreboard down 12-6.

Sam Pirrotta (132), Neitzke (152), and Klatt (195) all added pins. Chase Curtis and Parks won decisions for the Jackets. Patrick Glynn received a beneficial forfeit at 160 that broke a 21-all tie.

Perham used five pins to get up on Holdingford in the fifth place match.

Dylan Fudge gave Perham an early lead for the first time Saturday by fall over Alex Lange at 1:05 in the opening 106-pound match.

Nelson won his third match of the day at 120 5-1 over Jamey Koetter to put Perham ahead 9-6, followed by a Curtis pin of Aaron Mateska at 126 pounds for a 15-6 advantage.

Perham led the entire match after a 6-6 tie.

Zach Peterson got a pin at 138, which led to three straight decisions for Holdingford keeping the match tight at 21-18 Perham heading into the final five matches.

Schmitz and Parks sealed it for Perham with pins at 170 and 182, followed up by a major decision win from Klatt. Up 37-18, Jankhe and Bucholz received forfeits to end the day with a big 49-18 victory.

Perham is off for the remainder of the year and will be in action next at home Saturday, Jan. 4 at 10:30 a.m. as hosts of the Barrel O’ Fun Invitational.

Parks is a defending individual champ. He won the 170-pound division. Perham tied New London-Spicer for second place last year behind champions Moorhead.
