Solid weekend for Perham wrestling with multiple HOL/MS Conference titles

STAPLES — Sam Pirrotta and Patrick Glynn won individual titles and Perham took the team championship at the first Heart O’ Lakes/Mid-State Conference wrestling tournament Saturday.

The team battle was extremely close with Perham edging Frazee 207-204.5 for the championship. Pequot Lakes/Pine River-Backus placed third with 177 points.

Pirrotta won the 126-pound title on a 3-1 decision over Grant Jepson of Frazee.

Glynn had a wild comeback in the 160-pound finals to win by fall late in the match (5:46) over Pequot Lakes/Pine River-Backus’ Ozzy Miller. Miller led Glynn 11-7 with a minute remaining in the match. 

Miller wrestled up at 170 when the Road Crew visited Perham last week and defeated Cole Schmitz 9-6.

 Pirrotta avenged a 9-5 defeat to Jepson Jan. 14 in Perham’s one-point dual loss to Frazee at home.

Schmitz was one of four Perham wrestlers in championship matches Saturday. Chase Curtis (120), Colin Neitzke (145), Schmitz (170) and No. 9AA Williams Parks (182) all finished with runners-up placings.

No. 6A Conrad Kondos, of Breckenridge-Campbell-Tintah, shutout Curtis 5-0 in the 120 finals.

United Clay Becker’s Mason Swegarden, ranked No. 6AA, defeated Neitzke 4-0 in the 145 finals.

Schmitz met United Clay Becker’s Jonah Lange in the finals at 170. Lange defeated Schmitz by fall at 4:45.

No. 9AA Parks had a rematch with No. 6A Kody VanDenEykel, of Frazee, in the finals at 182. VanDenEykel won 3-1 decision two weeks ago and followed it up with a close 1-0 victory over Parks Saturday.

Ben Nelson placed third at 113 pounds defeating Isaac Mathei, PLPRB, in his final match.

Zach Peterson (138), Austen Schultz (152), and Jesse Klatt (195) finished in fourth place of their respective brackets.

Dylan Fudge added a fifth place finish at 106, as did Jesse Bucholz at 285 pounds.

Tyler Fudge (132) and Trent Jahnke (220) added sixth place marks to Perham’s team total.
