Swimmers third at Last Chance Invite

Jayden Cullen continues to post wins for the Yellowjackets with a first place time in the 200-freestyle.

PARK RAPIDS — The Perham boys swim team scored one-third of their points in relay swims in a third place finish at the Panther Last Chance Invitational Saturday.

The Yellowjackets had two runner-up finishes in the 200-medley relay and the 400-freestyle relay. Both second place finishes were good for 34 team points each.

Perham scored 30 in a fourth place finish in the 200-freestyle relay.

Patrick Murphy anchored the two second place teams swimming a team-best split of 25.01 in the medley relay and a 53.68 in the final leg of the 400-free relay.

Murphy’s top individual performance was second place in the 50-free swimming 25.03. Austin McCullough of Detroit Lakes won the event in 23.61.

Jayden Cullen and Todd Brown, Jr. were on both relay teams while Ben Sullivan swam the second leg of the 400-free; Luke Potts led off the medley relay team.

Cullen and Sullivan placed in the top four of the 200-freestyle race. Cullen won the race in a time of 1:55.68; Sullivan was fourth in 2:06.51.

Brown, Jr. had a runner-up finish in the 200-IM finishing behind only Kurt Fritze of Park Rapids. Fritze swam 2:26.80. Brown, Jr. put up a 2:28.21. Luke Potts finished fourth in 1:08.49. Brown, Jr. also finished second in the 100-butterfly. Potts was fourth.

Potts had his best result in the 100-backstroke swimming 1:07.61, good for second place behind Park Rapids Matthew Benson (1:07.14).

Perham put three swimmers in the top six of the 100-freestyle. Cullen was third, Murphy fifth and Sullivan sixth. The trio’s marks combined for 43 team points.

Sophomore Michael Beach had an impressive meet dropping a total of nine seconds.

Perham returns to Park Rapids Friday for the Mid-State Conference championships.
