THIEF RIVER FALLS — Top-seeded Perham was upset in the semifinals of the Section 8AA team tournament by the Pequot Lakes/Pine River-Backus Road Crew 32-24 to end the Jackets’ team season one match shy of a shot at a third consecutive state trip.

Perham defeated the Road Crew 35-15 Jan. 23, but a different PLPRB team showed up Saturday.

PLPRB had four different wrestlers in the lineup and reversed losses in three matches from the January meeting.

The match came down to heavyweights No. 6AA Jared Adkins and Perham’s Jesse Bucholz. Bucholz defeated Adkins in January by a score of 4-2.

Saturday, Adkins won 2-0 in overtime to clinch the match for the Road Crew. Perham trailed 29-24 coming into the match forcing Bucholz to win by technical fall for a tie or pin for the win.

The Road Crew got the match started with the return of No. 2AA Anthony Phillipson. Phillipson did not appear in the January match and defeated Dylan Fudge by fall at 3:23 to get PLPRB off to a 6-0 start.

Ben Nelson reversed an earlier 4-3 loss to PLPRB’s Issac Mathei with a 3-1 victory to cut the Crew’s lead in half.

Chase Curtis and Sam Pirrotta gave Perham a 9-6 lead, each with 2-0 and 9-3 decisions, respectively.

Nate Adkins was another different face for the Crew at 132 pounds and he defeated Tyler Fudge 6-5 to tie the score at nine.

No. 8AA Triston Rubner gave PLPRB the lead for good with an 11-0 tech fall win over Dylan Perrine. Rubner did not wrestle in January either.

Colin Neitzke defeated Dillon Nichols 11-4 to cut the lead to 14-12, but Jace Lodge (152) and No. 10AA Nick Gravdahl won by decision to keep the Crew’s momentum going up 20-12. Gravdahl is ranked at 152, but wrestled up at 160 versus Patrick Glynn winning 7-2.

Ozzie Miller and William Parks traded pins for each school to keep the advantage at eight points 26-18.

Justin Mackenthun put up four points for the Crew with a 10-2 victory over Jesse Klatt at 195, but Trent Jahnke kept Perham’s hopes alive with a pin at 2:30 over Cadel Roeder to set up the final match between Adkins and Bucholz.

Perham whooped Fergus Falls 61-9 in the quarterfinals to advance.

PLPRB went on to win the section and advance to state with a 40-23 victory over Detroit Lakes.

Perham individual wrestlers will have a shot at the state tournament on home mats this coming weekend as the Jackets host the Section 8AA meet.
