Cullen, Sullivan, Perham relays advance to 5A swimming finals

ALEXANDRIA — Jayden Cullen continued his quest for a repeat trip to the state meet with a strong day one of preliminary races at the Section 5A swimming and diving championships.

Cullen advanced to the finals clocking the fastest time in the 500-freestyle winning the race in 5:16.77. Cullen also had Perham's second-highest finish placing third in the 200-freestyle with a time of 1:53.76. Ben Sullivan also qualfied for the finals placing eighth in the 200 swimming 1:59.75.

Luke Potts and Todd Brown, Jr. placed 12th and 13th, respectively, in the 200 IM.

Brown, Jr. placed 11th in the 100-butterfly.

Potts added an 11th place finish in the 100-backstroke.

Patrick Murphy placed 13th in the 50-freestyle and in the 100-free. Sullivan placed 16th.

In relays, the 400-freestyle relay team of Cullen, Sullivan, Brown, Jr., and Murphy had Perham's top relay finish of the day placing fifth in 3:33.42.

The 200-yard medley team of Potts, Cullen, Brown, Jr., and Murphy placed seventh swimming 1:54.18.

The top eight finishers advance to Saturday's championship finals. Finishing ninth through 16th qualifies for the consolation races.

Friday was the first time in Perham swimming history that all of Perham's section qualifiers advanced to the second day.

Saturday's finals are scheduled for 3 p.m. after the diving competition, which begins at 11 a.m.
