Yellowjackets eliminated at state tournament

ST. PAUL — Perham's 120-pounder Chase Curtis, ranked No. 5 in Class AA, advanced to the quarterfinals of the Minnesota Class AA state wrestling tournament with an 8-6 decision over Minneapolis Patrick Henry's ChueShee Vang.

Curtis improved to (30-10), before facing Ryan Epps (35-5) of Cannon Falls in the quarterfinals. Epps won by fall at 3:36. Curtis was eliminated in wrestlebacks by Jackson Sweeney of Watertown-Mayer/Mayer Lutheran in a 6-2 decision.

In other lightweight action, 113-pounder Ben Nelson (26-14) dropped a major decision 10-0 to Annandale-Maple Lake's Nate Carlson (29-7). Nelson was eliminated from competition after Carlson lost his quarterfinal match to Paul Fittterer of Cannon Falls 6-1.

At 126 pounds, Sam Pirrotta was shutout 5-0 by David Flynn of Scott West. Pirrotta did not get a match in wrestlebacks after Flynn was pinned in 53 seconds by Worthington's Anthony Luft.

Cole Schmitz (27-13) was pinned in the first period (1:27) by Josh Selly (37-2) of Tri City United at 170 pounds. Blake Schroeder of Worthington ended the run for Schmitz with a 16-0 victory by technical fall.

Trom Peterson (29-4) of Simley defeated William Parks (31-8) by decision at 182 pounds. Parks lost in wrestlebacks to Tyler Midas of Foley by decision 9-2.
