VFW: Bemidji edges Stingers for state berth

FERGUS FALLS — The No. 1 seeded Perham Stingers lost a heartbreaker and were denied a trip to the state tournament by No. 2 seed Bemidji in a game that ended with the winning run on base.

Perham needed two wins against Bemidji to advance and got the first one 8-5.

Chandler Rach pitched five innings allowing two earned runs and Dylan Perrine pitched the remaining two allowing one earned run.

Andy Hanson had two hits and two RBIs, along with two RBIs from Chase Curtis to propel the Stingers into a winner-take-all scenario for both clubs.

Bemidji took a 5-2 scoring five unearned runs against Perrine, before Alec Meyer pitched two scoreless innings to give the Stingers a chance to win the ballgame.

Perham loaded the bases in the seventh inning with two outs. Curtis earned a RBI base on balls to pull Perham within a run 5-4, but Matthew Benke was induced into a game-ended groudout to send Bemidji to the state tournament.

Meyer had two hits to lead the Stinger offense.

Perham finishes the season with a record of 23-11.
