Balanced attack lifts Perham at home

There was no let down for the Perham Yellowjacket boys basketball team after its win against Eden Valley/Watkins on Saturday. The Yellowjackets returned home and cruised to a 72-36 victory over Hawley on Feb. 14 at the Prairie Wind Middle School gymnasium.

The Yellowjackets had four players finish in double figures with Jenson Beachy leading the balanced attack with 12 points. Aaron Solberg added 11 while Josh Jeziorski and Logan Richter finished with 10 points each.

The Yellowjackets shot out to a commanding 19-4 lead on their way to a 39-13 first half lead. The Yellowjackets attacked the glass and went to the hoop strong all night long. The Yellowjackets rarely missed, hitting on 29 of 41 attempts from the field. They were six of 15 from beyond the arc. The Yellowjackets missed just three shots inside the 3-point line, patiently moving the ball, working for the opening at the hoop. Solberg, Richter and John LaFond consistently worked their way to the hoop. The trio finished a combined 13 of 14 from inside the paint. The Yellowjackets controlled the glass as well, out rebounding the Nuggets, 28-11.

Ben Winkels dished out four assists, while Moser handed out three in the win.

Moser and John LaFond added seven points each in the game for the Yellowjackets. The Yellowjackets had 13 players record points in the victory.

Drew Thompson, Nathan Isaacson and Jacob Vetter finished with seven points each, leading the way for the Nuggets in the loss.

The victory improves the Yellowjackets to 19-2 overall and 9-2 in the Heart O’Lakes Conference. They have now won eight straight games and hold an 11-1 record against Section 8AA opponents. The Nuggets fall to 6-12 overall on the season and 3-5 in the HOL.

The Yellowjackets return home on Thursday, Feb. 16 when they play host to Little Falls. The Flyers are 8-13 overall on the season and have won two of their last three games, sweeping a home and home series with Mora.
