Tennis: Lakers bounce Wolverines from 8A playoffs

FARGO — The fourth-seeded Detroit Lakes tennis team completed the season sweep of No. 5 Wadena-Deer Creek by a score of 4-3 Monday in the opening round of Section 8A tennis playoffs.

The Lakers had won two prior meetings by identical scores of 5-2. WDC/P Head Coach Peter Tranvik switched his lineup around to combat the season’s trend and gained one game because of it.

Mike Paavola and Drew Larson have been the Wolverines top singles players all year. Fondrik paired them up at No. 1 doubles to take on teh consistent duo of brothers Isaac and Alex Fondrick. The Fondricks came out on top three and two. The move led to losses at the top two singles spots, as well. DL’s Carlos Espinosa dispatched Shane Perry four and three. Caleb Howard defeated Austin Andreen 7-6, 6-1. Howard won the first set tiebreak 7-1.

WDC/P got wins from Christian Hinckley at three singles 7-5, 6-3 over Chandler Hanks. Barny Busa defeated Austin Nelson 6-2, 7-6 (7-4) at Section 8A Quarterfinals No. 4 Detroit Lakes 4, No. 5 Wadena-Deer Creek/Perham 3 Singles 1. Carlos Espinosa (DL) def. Shane Perry, 6-4, 6-3 2. Caleb Howard (DL) def. Austin Andreen, 7-6 (7-1) 6-1 3. Christian Hinckley (WDC/P) def. Chandler Hanks, 7-5, 6-3 4. Barny Busa (WDC/P) def. Austin Nelson, 6-2, 7-6 (7-4) at four-singles.

The teams split the second and third doubles matches. Mike Botzet and Kris Hanson defeated DL’s Luke Aggeraaten and Colton Friesen in three sets 1-6, 6-4, 6-0. Brady Crawford and Dylan Bremset of Detroit Lakes took a meaningful third-doubles match from Fikri Rahmat and Tyler Wieser-Matthews one and one for the win. Doubles 1.
