PERHAM —  CJ Mulcahy and Josh Still combined on a no-hitter eliminating the No. 6-seeded Hawley Nuggets 8-0 in Section 8AA baseball playoffs Thursday. The tournament continues Saturday with double-elimination play.

The Nuggets’ defense left starter Parker Hanson out to dry with swiss cheese fielding committing seven errors making all of Perham’s runs unearned.

Hanson’s line of five innings pitched, two hits allowed, and eight unearned runs is indicative of the kind of game that was played. It was ugly. Hanson walked and struck out three.

Jordan Harms fanned the side in the sixth in an inning of relief for Hawley.

Mulcahy cruised on the mound allowing only one base runner on a past ball after a strikeout of Hanson to lead off the second. Hanson never left the first base bag.

Mulcahy struck out six Nuggets in five innings of work.

“I felt great all day and it must have carried over to the mound," Mulcahy said. “A no hitter is always cool but the best part of it is the shutout.”

Still allowed only one base runner in his two innings of relief hitting Chad Clute to lead off the seventh. Clute advanced to second base on a fielders’ choice. Still induced a fly to right field off the bat of Jeremy Schenck to end the game in the only at-bat for the Nuggets with a runner in scoring position.

Despite Hawley’s poor fielding, Yellowjacket batters made solid contact and drilled the left side of the defense repeatedly with hot shots on the ground.

“We are a team that has been struggling to get runs across the plate so if you can throw a shutout that is huge,” Mulcahy said. “Today, we scored eight runs and hit the ball well. If that continues we will be hard to beat.”

Luke Sailer and Tanner Carlson each had a pair of RBIs for Perham. Sailer knocked in Austin Erickson for the game-winner in the second inning on a one-out single. Carlson followed that up with a two-RBI single to score Jaden Meyer and Sailer for an early 3-0 lead.

The Yellowjackets added four in the third inning behind three Hawley gaffes in the field. Joey Lindberg, Erickson, Meyer and Sailer scored. Sailer recorded his second RBI on a bases loaded walk. Perham led 7-0 after three innings.

Still scored the final run of the game after being beaned, stealing second and scoring on a two-base error at third base.

Perham stranded seven runners; Hawley left their only two runners on base.

Hawley finishes their season with a record of 6-6. Perham improves to 12-5.

Erickson, Meyer and Sailer the five through seven batters in the lineup all scored twice.

In scores around the 8AA southern bracket: No. 2 Park Rapids defeated No. 7 Breckenridge 13-3. Perham and Park Rapids will play at Matt’s Field in Perham at 1 p.m. Saturday, June 1.

The Yellowjackets and Panthers split two games this season in Park Rapids by scores of 4-1 Park Rapids and 15-9 Perham.

Perham will face the Panthers with a full lineup, after a number of starters were suspended from Thursday’s game due to violations of team policy.

The top seed, Detroit Lakes, will play at 1 p.m. Saturday at Krueger Field against the winner of No. 5 Fergus Falls and No. 4 Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton. The Otters and Rebels were rained out Thursday and will play Friday afternoon in Dilworth. Saturday’s 1 p.m. games will be followed by 3:30 games, winners at Krueger and the losers of the opening games facing elimination at Matt’s Field.

Crookston, Warroad and Roseau all advanced in the north subsection.
