McClellan Leads NDSU to Fifth at Stanford Invitational; named Summit League Athlete of the Week

STANFORD, Calif. – The North Dakota State women's cross country team earned a fifth-place team finish among the 15 Division I teams at the Stanford Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 28.

Senior Maddie McClellan was the top finisher for the Bison, placing 19th overall in a time of 22:13 for the six-kilometer course.

As a team, NDSU finished one spot in front of San Francisco, who was ranked 23rd in the nation in the most recent USTFCCCA rankings.  

Junior Abbi Aspengren was NDSU's No. 2 finisher, completing the course in 22:22 for 27th place overall.

Redshirt freshman Erin Teschuk took 34th in 22:40.  

Senior Heidi Peterson made her 2013 debut, claiming 49th place with a time of 22:59.

Sophomore Paige Stratioti completed the scoring for the Bison, taking 147th place in 24:29.  

Stanford, ranked eighth in the nation this week, won the team title with 33 points, and Sacramento State was second with 83.  

The Bison are scheduled to compete next at the SDSU Classic in Brookings, S.D., on Oct. 4.    

McClellan earned her first career Summit League Athlete of the Week award after finishing in the top 20 at the Stanford Invitational and leading the Bison, previously No. 6 in the Midwest Region, to a fifth-place finish ahead of then No. 23 San Francisco and UC Davis, No. 6 in the West Region.  The senior recorded a league-best 6k time of 22:13 for a 19th-place finish against runners from a pair of nationally-ranked teams and a trio of regionally-ranked teams.
