PERHAM — Coming off a two-win season, the Lady Jackets were not gifted by scheduling in facing the Staples-Motley Cardinals in their home opener.

The Cardinals, led by four scorers in double figures, defeated Perham 65-27.

Mikayla Wing led all scorers with 15 points, Jaelin Beachy, Mackenzie Holst, and Grace Wolhowe all scored 11 to pace Staples-Motley.

Maria Rutten was the only Yellowjacket in double figures scoring 10 points.

The Cardinals jumped out to a 9-0 lead and kept Perham off the scoreboard for minutes at a time allowing occasional baskets as they built a commanding 21-5 lead midway through the first half.

Staples-Motley led 39-14 at the break.

Tina Scheidecker scored eight points for Perham. Josie Beachy, only a freshman, had some impressive time on the court in her varsity debut scoring three points but adding some much-needed movement to Perham’s offensive scheme.

Staples-Motley was 21-6 last season falling one game short of the Section 6AA final in a Subsection final loss in overtime to Sauk Centre.

Perham moves on to face Wadena-Deer Creek Thursday, Dec. 5 on the road. The Wolverines won 18 games last season losing to Pelican Rapids in the 8AA Sebsection final by 10 points.
