Undefeated gymnasts score in the clutch to win at Princeton

PRINCETON — The Perham gymnastics team just keeps on rolling.

Perham defeated two ranked Class A teams and a field of six teams at the Clemenson Gymnastics Invitational Saturday.

Perham scored 140.15 points besting No. 12A North Branch by a solid point. North Branch scored 139.125, led by all-around champion Katy Trunk (35.80).

Perham earned that winning point on their last event - balance beam.

Both schools were tied at 104.5 heading into the final event.

“Our girls are extremely good at pulling through in tight situations, and they did exactly just that,” Head Coach Jenna Schmitz said.

Perham put the meet title away taking four of the top five balance beam places.

Jordan Martinson won the event with a 9.25, followed by Ashley Hokanson’s 9.15. Maple Grove’s Alex Kara kept it from a Yellowjacket sweep with a third place performance - 9.0. Adrienne Meyer (8.9) and Carly Breitenfeldt (8.8) placed fourth and fifth.

While the regular stars of the Yellowjackets were up to their typical finishes, seventh-grader Hokanson had her best result of the season finishing second to Trunk in the all-around by half a point scoring 35.30. Not a bad result considering it was her first varsity all-around performance.

“Ashley really proved that she deserves to have that spot,” said Schmitz.

Perham has already proven to be as dominating as expected, but to have a new face step up mid-season makes them even more of a threat for a 12th consecutive trip to the state meet in late February.

Despite that, Schmitz has the team on the continual track of improvement necessary to compete for a podium spot in Minneapolis.

“We are still leaving out a lot of points that I know they are very capable of accomplishing,” said Schmitz. “Could this be due to the lack of meets we have had? Possibly, but when you get thrown into difficult situations, that’s when you really have to compete to the fullest of your ability.”

Perham had not competed since before Christmas. Weather postponed the January 6 meet with Park Rapids. In their three competitions so far this season, Perham is undefeated.

Hokanson and Martinson both made up a lot of ground on Trunk from their final beam performances, but Trunk had enough points from top three finishes in the other three apparati to hold off the charging Yellowjackets.

Trunk, who was 23rd at the state Class A all-around as a sophomore last season, placed first on vault (9.4), third on bars (8.65), 10th on beam (8.65), and second on floor (9.1).

Hokanson was fifth on vault (8.9), ninth on uneven bars (8.255), second on beam (9.15), and third on floor exercise (9.0) to earn runner-up honors.

Besides winning the beam competition, Martinson placed sixth on bars (8.35) and third on vault (9.0). An 8.1 on floor exercise kept Martinson from the all-around title.

Breitenfeldt competed in two events with top five finishes in both. She was runner-up (8.9) on bars to teammate Adrienne Meyer (9.1).

Meyer’s 9.1 was the first time the Perham freshman had scored a 9.0+ on bars and it was good for first place.

Breitenfeldt placed fifth on beam with an 8.8.

Meyer added a 8.9 on beam, good for fourth place and a 8.6 on floor.

Alexis Peichel gave Perham three gymnasts in the top six of the all-around placing sixth with a score of 33.90. Peichel had a fifth place bars performance to go with a seventh place floor exercise.

Uneven bars were kind to the Yellowjackets as Perham placed five gymnasts in the top nine.

Perham returns to action Friday looking to defeat section rival Detroit Lakes for the third time this season. The meet is in Detroit Lakes at the Minnesota Flyers Gymnastics arena. The varsity meet is scheduled to begin at 7:15 p.m.
