Golf: Perham girls team qualifies for Section 8AA meet

DETROIT LAKES — The Perham girls golf team finished third behind defending state champions Detroit Lakes and runners-up Wadena-Deer Creek at the Section 8AA South Subsection tournament at Wildflower Golf Course Wednesday, May 29.

The Lakers swept the top five finishes led by Medalist Trisa Hutchinson’s 74. Kate Smit shot a 75 and Natalie Roth was third with a 77. Matt Tschider (79) and Emma Thompson (81) completed the sweep for the defending champs. Thompson’s 81 did not count in the team results as only the top four scores are recorded for team results.

Perham was led by Rachel Nelson’s 82 and Becca Huus’ 83. Destiny Mitchell carded a 93, while Liz Sonnenberg shot 109 for the fourth qualifying score. Michaela Soule shot 120 and Danielle Graham shot 122 to round out Perham’s team results. Nelson and Huus shot the best scores by any golfers not on the Lakers' squad finishing 

Detroit Lakes’ team score of 305 was 56 shots better than Wadena-Deer Creek’s 361. The Wolverines took runners-up honors by six strokes under Perham’s 367.

Six other golfers qualified for the Section 8AA meet at Long Bow Golf Club in Walker, Monday, June 3 at 10 a.m.

Alexa Bekkerus shot 87 and will represent Pelican Rapids. Hawley’s Paige Mattfeld (87) and Rylee Danielson (92) qualified, along with three golfers from Fergus Falls: Nikki Ellingson-91, Megan Niblock-93, and Morgan Daniels-95.
