A furious second half comeback by the Perham Yellowjackets could not quite catch East Grand Forks Saturday night in a 46-43 Section 8AA decision at the Concordia Fieldhouse. Perham' s season ended when Freshman Katie Johnson's three-pointer to tie the game hit the front of the rim as the final buzzer sounded.
A southbound Volvo semi truck hauling a load of sawdust chips was damaged Thursday morning when it left Highway 71 nine miles north of Wadena in Rockwood Township. No other vehicles were involved in the accident. According to the Minnesota State Patrol, the driver of the vehicle, Corey Allen Olson, 40, of Badger, Minn., was not injured in the accident. Olson told the State Patrol he reached down for an energy drink and during this time his semi truck got close to the shoulder of the road. The truck was pulled into the ditch, rolled on it's side and slid for approximately 100 feet before coming to a stop. Olson's dog was killed when it fell out of the truck and was trapped underneath. Olson was wearing a lap and shoulder belt. Olson was cited for duty to drive with due care. The Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT) provided signs and two employees to assist with traffic control. The Wadena Sheriff's Department also assisted at the scene. The vehicle was towed from the scene by Collins Brothers Towing Service.
Health is Joel Beiswenger's business so there was no way Saturday's snowfall was going to keep the president and CEO of Tri-County Health Care away from the M. State-Wadena campus. With a new carpet of white on the ground outside the crowded interior of M. State took on the busy hum of a marketplace. More than 65 exhibits by local organizations and businesses were on display and there was plenty of entertainment including face painters, artists, dancers and Taekwondo demonstrations.
Many an idea is hatched in a fish house in the middle of a cold Minnesota winter. Otter Tail County's Erik Osberg of had an idea some years back that he could make a winter ice fishing get together with some of his pals on Otter Tail Lake into an annual event. He wanted to call it Otter Fest on Ice. That notion bobbed around in Osberg's mind for years and its day finally came last June.
Two area teenage girls were injured Saturday night when the vehicles they were driving collided near the intersection of Highway 29 and County Road 52 southwest of Wadena. According to the Minnesota State Patrol, Caitlyn Irene Mcknight, 19, of Bertha was northbound on Highway 29 when the 2008 Chevrolet Impala she was operating sideswiped a southbound 2004 Chevrolet Cavalier operated by Aubreenna Kellee Seals, 18, of Wadena. Both drivers suffered non-life threatening injuries and both were transported by ambulance to Tri-County Health Care in Wadena.
Lisa Meader gunned in four treys in the first half Tuesday as the Perham Yellowjackets built a 31-9 lead en route to a 61-37 victory over Wadena-Deer Creek.
David Jacob Miller, 17, of Staples died Thursday morning when the 2000 Horse Buggy Landau he was driving was rear-ended by a 2011 Mack 600 semi-truck driven by Douglas William Calkins, 60, Deerwood. According to the Minnesota State Patrol, Miller's horse and buggy was westbound on Highway 210 near 211th Avenue in Todd County when the collision occurred at 7:19 a.m. Miller was ejected onto the roadway and transported by air to North Memorial Hospital in the Twin Cities. The horse also suffered fatal injuries in the crash.
An ongoing investigation into the cause of an accidental shooting Sunday morning in Deer Creek has revealed the .22 caliber rifle used had been hidden from view. At 7:34 a.m. the Otter Tail County Sheriff’s office received a report that a five-year-old boy had accidentally shot his three-year-old sister in the stomach. The girl was transported to Tri-County Health Care in Wadena and then airlifted to the Children’s Hospital in Minneapolis.
DEER CREEK — A 3-year-old in Deer Creek was apparently shot by a 5-year-old Sunday morning, Nov. 19, the Otter Tail County Sheriff's Office said. The victim is in stable condition at Children's Hospital in Minneapolis, the office said without releasing any names.
