Due to a leaky roof and other building problems, the official opening of the New York Mills Business Incubator has been postponed until April 2013. It was originally scheduled to open this month. Located in the old creamery building on Centennial Drive, the Business Incubator is a collaboration between the city of NY Mills and M-State. It is intended to encourage entrepreneurs to start businesses there by offering perks like reduced rates on office space. The NY Mills Economic Development Authority decided in September to postpone the opening because of the building problems.
They've helped families that have lost it all in a house fire. They've helped young adults start out fresh after escaping a bad situation. They helped one woman clothe her five kids while she went through nursing school. And they helped a young bride find her "perfect" wedding dress. They're the volunteers behind the Clothing Mission in Richville. And since January, they've provided more than 45,900 pounds of clothes to people in need in the community. The volunteers have heard many stories like these over the years, Mary Hein and Winnie Huwe explained in an interview Tuesday.
For the last 40 years, officers in light blue uniforms have been happily serving the Perham community. They help search for missing people, check in with residents after bad storms, raise funds to meet community needs, entertain families at Turtle Fest, and more. And they do it all for free. As the volunteer backup force for the city's police department, the members of the Perham Police Reserves like to joke that they "do all the dirty work" for the department, according to long-time member, Lt.
In the end, it doesn't matter what it's made of, but rather what it appears to be. At least that's the idea behind concrete designing trends. Not only can concrete be made to look like many other materials, but its ability to adhere to a variety of surfaces increases its potential. Concrete can also be textured and stained in different ways, giving it an artistic edge. What seems to be a marble countertop, for example, may actually be a stained concrete with a special glossy seal. And that decorative artwork above the fireplace?

Six weeks with 18 first graders has taught student teacher Hailey Windels more about teaching than any of her college classes could. Windels, a student in the bachelors in education program at North Dakota State University, is currently a student teacher at New York Mills School. In an interview, she said once she was leading the classroom, she learned pretty quickly "what works and what doesn't," such as which students should be partnered for math time and where they should sit for group work. The main thing she couldn't learn in her college courses, but learned fairly quickly through stud
Editor's note: This is the first in a four-part weekly series introducing the new teachers at Perham schools. The Perham-Dent School District went on a hiring spree last summer, bringing in 22 new teachers - nine at the high school, three at the middle school and 10 at the elementary school. "A month into the school year now, we're all very pleased with the staff that we were able to bring on board with us," Superintendent Mitch Anderson stated in an email to the newspaper.
"Artists in this day and age use skills very widely, instead of focusing on one thing," artist Andrew Vomhof explained in a recent interview. Vomhof has a degree in sculpture, but relies on many forms of artwork in order to make a living. While he is sometimes commissioned for sculpture projects, he also dabbles in star charts and aerial maps. He makes products that are both useful and add design elements into homes. He also uses his skills to design prototypes to solve specific problems for businesses, and works with artists from around the world.
The Continental Divide Folk School has officially begun offering classes at the New York Mills Regional Cultural Center. In an interview, Director Jamie Robertson said the cultural center's board of directors has been studying other folk schools in Minnesota since Bob and Bonnie Thompson donated the creamery building at the end of 2011.
