Nov. 14, 1911-Jan. 3, 2008 Luella I. Seaberg, 96, of Detroit Lakes, died Thursday January 3, 2008 at her residence. Luella I. Pearson was born to Henry and Caroline (Halvorson) Pearson on Nov. 14, 1911 in Detroit Lakes. She grew up and attended District 7 Country School in Richwood Township, then attended and graduated from Detroit Lakes High School. After graduating high school, she attended Normal School, where she earned a teaching certificate. Luella taught Country School for five years. On Dec. 27, 1934, Luella married Roy O. Seaberg in Detroit Lakes.
March 20, 1930-Dec. 30, 2007 Stanley J. Hamernik, 77, of rural Ulen, died in his home on Sunday, December 30, 2007. Stanley Joseph Hamernik was born the son of Frank and Aloise (Dvorak) Hamernik on March 20, 1930, in Walworth Township, on the family farm. He was baptized at Detroit Lakes, and confirmed his faith at Aspelund Lutheran Church, Flom, Minn. As a young boy he grew up on the family farm in section 9 of Walworth Township. He attended country school at District 54, and graduated with the class of 1949 from Ulen High School.
Feb. 25, 1915-Dec. 30, 2007 Edna C. Benzinger, 92, of Frazee, died Sunday, December 30, 2007 at the Frazee Care Center. Edna Clara Karger was born to William and Agnes (Blake) Karger on Feb. 25, 1915 in Folden Township, Otter Tail County. She attended country school in Folden Township. On Sept. 23, 1940, Edna married George Benzinger at North Effington Church. They farmed in Douglas County, Minn., until 1963, when they moved to Monravia, Calif. While in Monravia, Edna worked as a custodian for the YWCA. In 1974, the couple moved to Frazee, where they resided at the Rivercrest Apartments.
Dec. 3, 1918-Jan. 1, 2008 Marvin W. "Tory" Olsen, 89, of Lake Park, died peacefully at home on Tuesday, January 1, 2008, under the care of Hospice of the Red River Valley and surrounded by his loving family. Tory was born to Thore and Mary Olsen on Dec. 3, 1918 in Truman, Minn., where he grew up and attended school, graduating from Truman High School in 1936. On June 28, 1952, Tory married Edlin Deloris Rikhus in Altanta Church. They made their home in Lake Park, for 45 years. At the time of Tory's death, they lived in Detroit Lakes. They were blessed with four children.
Dec. 29, 1954-Dec. 24, 2007 Former Graceville, Minn., resident Charlene L. "Charlie" Gray, 52, of Osage, died unexpectedly at her home on Monday, December 24, 2007. Charlene Lynn Gray was born to Jim and Edna (Geyer) Gray on Dec. 29, 1954 in Graceville, Minn. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Patrick's Catholic Church at Collis, Minn. As a young girl, she attended the Holy Rosary Catholic Elementary School and graduated from Graceville Public High School in May 1972. Charlie went on to attend the University of Minnesota-Morris, where she earned a degree in sociology.
June 10, 1917-Dec. 25, 2007 Gertrude D. Zurn, 90, of Callaway, died Tuesday, December 25, 2007 at St. Mary's Nursing Center in Detroit Lakes. Gertrude Delores Rohr was born to Nicholas and Mabel (Hancock) Rohr on June 10, 1917 in McHugh, Minn. She attended District 22 School and was a 1935 graduate of Detroit Lakes, High School. Gertrude attended teacher training in Wadena, and graduated in 1936. She taught in several Detroit Lakes rural schools. She married Lawrence H. Zurn on June 10, 1941 at Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Detroit Lakes.
Sept. 18, 1942-Dec. 20, 2007 Eugene William Chaika, 65, of White Earth, died Thursday, December 20, 2007. Surviving Eugene are his children, Eugene, Deanna, Christina, Joshua and Wesley; brother, Oliver; sister, Sharyn; and many grandchildren. A gathering of family and friends is scheduled from 2-5 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 6, 2008 at the Ogema VFW Hall, Ogema.
Teresa Mae Harkins, 52, of 30613 Lake 6 Road, Frazee has been sentenced in Becker County District Court for felony fifth-degree controlled substance crime -- sale. On March 8 members of the West Central Minnesota Drug Task Force executed a search warrant at her residence. They found about six pounds of marijuana in her home and outbuildings, along with items used to package and sell marijuana, according to court records. She pleaded guilty Nov.
Tyler James McClure, 22, of 30387 Highway 10, Wadena has been sentenced in Becker County District Court for felony fifth-degree controlled substance crime -- possession. He was stopped by police officers in Detroit Lakes April 5 after a confidential reliable informant for the sheriff's department reported that McClure had a large quantity of marijuana in his 1995 Chevy Blazer. He consented to a search of his vehicle, and officers found 184 grams of marijuana in a large baggie in the center console, according to court records. He pleaded guilty Nov.
Oct. 19, 1918-Dec. 18, 2007 Joseph Kemper, 89, of Waubun, died on December 18, 2007, at the MeritCare Palliative Care Unit in Fargo. Joe was born to Bernard and Mary (Niehaus) Kemper on Oct. 19, 1918, in Rosedale Township. He attended the Fish Lake Country School and worked on the home farm in Waubun. At the age of 19, Joe was drafted into the United States Army, where he served his country for three years. On Dec. 13, 1943, he married Larraine Haider at St. Ann's Catholic Church in Waubun.
