Oct. 22, 1939-Jan. 1, 2008 Lyle K. Thompson, 68, of Ice Cracking Lake, passed away on Tuesday, January l, 2008 at the Heritage Living Center in Park Rapids. Lyle Kenneth Thompson was born to George and Rose (Bunker) Thompson on Oct. 22, 1939 at White Earth. He attended public school and grew into manhood at Pine Point, Minn. As a young man, Lyle Joined the United States Air Force, and proudly served his country. Following his honorable discharge from the military, Lyle returned to Pine Point. Later, he attended chef's school in Minneapolis.
May 23, 1925-Jan. 5, 2008 Leona Tingelstad, 82, of rural Detroit Lakes, died on Saturday, January 5, 2008 at her home. Leona Priem was born the daughter of Walter and Alice (Johnson) Priem on May 23, 1925 in Dunn Township, near Vergas. She was baptized Nov. 8, 1925, at Zion Lutheran Church, rural Pelican Rapids, and was confirmed April 20, 1958, also at Zion Lutheran Church. She attended school at District 149 in Dunn Township. On Oct. 7, 1943, Leona married Milan Tingelstad in South Dakota. Leona was a homemaker and a lifelong member of Zion Lutheran Church.
Aug. 4, 1937-Dec. 27, 2007 Cyril C. "Cy" Howard, Jr., 70, of Naytahwaush, Minn., died Thursday, December 27, 2007, at the VA Hospital in St. Cloud. Cyril was born to Cyril and Sadie (Peake) Howard on Aug. 4, 1937, on the White Earth Reservation. He attended the Indian boarding schools at Pipestone, Wahpeton and graduated from high school from Flandreau Indian School. In the fall of 1956, he entered Haskell Institute for further studies. In 1957 he enlisted in the Air Force, and received an honorable discharge in 1960.
Aug. 10, 1978-Jan. 1, 2008 Teanna Marie Clark, 29, whose Ojibwe name is "Gaag Equay" (which means "Porcupine Woman"), of Redby, Minn., died Tuesday, January 1, 2008 at her home. Teanna was born the daughter of Mary Lou (Clark) Norcross and Michael Norcross, Sr., on Aug. 10, 1978 in Red Lake, Minn. She was raised in Red Lake and Kelliher. After receiving her certified nursing assistant certificate, she worked for REM house, Joudain/Perpich Extended Care Facility in Red Lake, Health Star Circle of Life, Goldpine and Subway.
March 20, 1930-Dec. 30, 2007 Stanley J. Hamernik, 77, of rural Ulen, died in his home on Sunday, December 30, 2007. Stanley Joseph Hamernik was born the son of Frank and Aloise (Dvorak) Hamernik on March 20, 1930, in Walworth Township, on the family farm. He was baptized at Detroit Lakes, and confirmed his faith at Aspelund Lutheran Church, Flom, Minn. As a young boy he grew up on the family farm in section 9 of Walworth Township. He attended country school at District 54, and graduated with the class of 1949 from Ulen High School.
Detroit Lakes native David Norris Hoffman, 60, died Monday, December 31, 2007. Original and loving relative and friend to so many significant people, Dave spent his life making people happy. Those who knew him best loved him for his humor, love, brilliance, true compassion, honesty, music and huge heart. He had the ability to make any situation better and always kept you laughing.
Jan. 17, 1928-Jan. 1, 2008 Former Frazee resident Evelyn L. Beck, 79, of Wadena, died on Tuesday, January 1, 2008 in Fair Oaks Lodge, Wadena. Evelyn Radel was born the daughter of William and Selma (Frank) Radel on Jan. 17, 1928 in Evergreen Township, where she was raised and attended the Palmer School. She married Alvin Beck on June 17, 1947 in Evergreen Township. They moved to Spokane, Wash., where they lived for a short time before moving back to the Frazee area, where they farmed. Evelyn also worked for the Frazee School District and for St. Mary's Nursing Home in Detroit Lakes.
Nov. 14, 1911-Jan. 3, 2008 Luella I. Seaberg, 96, of Detroit Lakes, died Thursday January 3, 2008 at her residence. Luella I. Pearson was born to Henry and Caroline (Halvorson) Pearson on Nov. 14, 1911 in Detroit Lakes. She grew up and attended District 7 Country School in Richwood Township, then attended and graduated from Detroit Lakes High School. After graduating high school, she attended Normal School, where she earned a teaching certificate. Luella taught Country School for five years. On Dec. 27, 1934, Luella married Roy O. Seaberg in Detroit Lakes.
Dec. 3, 1918-Jan. 1, 2008 Marvin W. "Tory" Olsen, 89, of Lake Park, died peacefully at home on Tuesday, January 1, 2008, under the care of Hospice of the Red River Valley and surrounded by his loving family. Tory was born to Thore and Mary Olsen on Dec. 3, 1918 in Truman, Minn., where he grew up and attended school, graduating from Truman High School in 1936. On June 28, 1952, Tory married Edlin Deloris Rikhus in Altanta Church. They made their home in Lake Park, for 45 years. At the time of Tory's death, they lived in Detroit Lakes. They were blessed with four children.
Dec. 29, 1954-Dec. 24, 2007 Former Graceville, Minn., resident Charlene L. "Charlie" Gray, 52, of Osage, died unexpectedly at her home on Monday, December 24, 2007. Charlene Lynn Gray was born to Jim and Edna (Geyer) Gray on Dec. 29, 1954 in Graceville, Minn. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Patrick's Catholic Church at Collis, Minn. As a young girl, she attended the Holy Rosary Catholic Elementary School and graduated from Graceville Public High School in May 1972. Charlie went on to attend the University of Minnesota-Morris, where she earned a degree in sociology.
