May 1, 1923-March 29, 2008 Mary Lou King, 84, of Waubun, died Saturday, March 29, 2008 at St. Mary's Regional Health Center, Detroit Lakes. Mary Lou Oskinowe was born to William and Louise (King) Oskinowe on May 1, 1923 in White Earth. She attended boarding schools in Red Lake and in White Earth. Mary Lou married Fred King on Jan. 27, 1945 in White Earth, where they made their home. The couple worked with seasonal traditional camps throughout Minnesota, harvesting wild rice, pulping, logging and collecting maple syrup.
Dec. 16, 1912-March 29, 2008 Lelia G. Schmidt, 95, of Detroit Lakes, died on Saturday, March 29, 2008 at St. Mary's Nursing Center, Detroit Lakes. Lelia Grace Cusey was born to Lloyd and Grace (Frank) Cusey on Dec. 16, 1912 in Detroit Lakes, where she was raised and attended school, graduating from Detroit Lakes High School in 1932. She then attended secretarial school in the Twin Cities area. Lelia returned to Detroit Lakes, where she worked as a bookkeeper and secretary for the Gamble Skogmo Stores in Detroit Lakes, Wadena, Fergus Falls and the Fargo-Moorhead area.
Dec. 11, 1910-March 21, 2008 Anna Basswood, 97, of Ponsford, died Friday, March 21, 2008 at her home surrounded by her loving family. Anna was born to Grover Oshgay and Nancy Stevens on Dec. 11, 1910 in Danbury, Wis. As an infant, she was adopted by Rev. James and Jane Rice. She came to the Ponsford area as a young woman, and harvested vegetables in the Fargo area. For many years, she would take part in the annual wild rice harvest, and she also worked in the maintenance department at the Pine Point Indian Health Service Clinic.
Dec. 28, 1974-March 20, 2008 Former Detroit Lakes resident Henry C. "Hank" Bonde IV, 33, of Anchorage, Alaska, died Thursday, March 20, 2008 at his home. Henry Clayton Bonde IV was born to Henry C. and Jackie (Ekren) Bonde on Dec. 28, 1974 at Fridley, Minn. He grew up and attended school in Detroit Lakes. He graduated with his associate degree from the Scottsdale Culinary Institute Le Cordon Bleu Culinary Program in 2000. Over the years, Hank lived in Scottsdale, Ariz., Lake Tahoe, Calif., Colorado Springs, Colo., Sacramento, Calif., and had lived in Anchorage since 2003.
Oct. 23, 1943-March 22, 2008 Wayne Erickson, 64, of Audubon, died Saturday, March 22, 2008 at Innovis Hospital in Fargo. Landon Wayne Erickson, known as Wayne, was born to Emil and Thora (Zachariason) Erickson on Oct. 23, 1943 in Hawley. He attended District 15 rural elementary school in rural Hawley, and Hawley and Audubon high schools. He served with the U.S. Army and, following his discharge, returned to the Audubon area, where he drove a milk truck. He later drove truck for Haukedahl Trucking in Audubon, and then worked as a mechanic for several area trucking firms.
Sept. 9, 1918-March 23, 2008 Florence I. Johannsen, 89, of Detroit Lakes, died Sunday, March 23, 2008 at Innovis Hospital, Fargo. Florence Ahlsten was born to August and Mathilda Ahlsten on Sept. 9, 1918 in Taylor Township, Wheaton, Minn. She attended school at District 60. After graduation, Florence attended Beauty School in Fergus Falls, and continued to work there until meeting Duane Johannsen and marrying him in Wheaton in 1941. They moved to Santa Monica, Calif., and lived there before returning to the family homestead in 1942.
Oct. 16, 1917-March 21, 2008 Vergil E. Peterson, 90, of Detroit Lakes, died Friday, March 21, 2008 at St. Mary's Regional Health Center, Detroit Lakes. Vergil Evelyn Martinson was born to August and Marie (Moe) Martinson on October 16, 1917 in Audubon Township, where she was raised and educated. As a young adult, she worked at the Edgewater. Vergil married William Peterson on Sept. 29, 1940 at Zion Lutheran Church, Detroit Lakes. They made their home in Detroit Lakes. William died on April 20, 1977.
Nov. 1, 1948-March 17, 2008 Detroit Lakes native Donald R. Ueke, Sr., 59, of Sauk Rapids, Minn., died Monday, March 17, 2008 at the Medical Center Hospital in Odessa, Texas, due to a truck accident. Donald was born to Merton and Dorothy (Harms) Buck on Nov. 1, 1948 in Detroit Lakes. He served his country in the United States Marine Corps during the Vietnam War. Donald was wounded at Chu Lai and received the Purple Heart, Good Conduct Medal, Presidential Unit Commendation Medal-Republic of Vietnam Meritorious Unit Citation, and Gallantry Cross Medal.
Dec. 26, 1927-March 23, 2008 Donald D. Tyge, 80, of Park Rapids, died Sunday, March 23, 2008 at the Heritage Living Center in Park Rapids, surrounded by his loved ones. Donald Dale Tyge was born to Oliver and Addie (Triggs) Tyge on Dec. 26, 1927 in Ayrshire, Iowa. At age seven, he moved with his family to the Ponsford, area where he grew up and attended Round Lake Country School. Donald enlisted in the United States Army on March 7, 1946, and he served in occupied Japan during World War II. He was honorably discharged from the army on March 9, 1954.
May 12, 1925-March 16, 2008 Former Detroit Lakes resident Katharine G. Smith, 82, of North Branch, Minn., died on Sunday, March 16, 208 at the Cambridge Medical Center. Katharine Gloria Anderson was born the daughter of Adolph and Ruth Anderson on May 12, 1925 in North Branch. Her parents were lifelong residents of the community, and she grew up with her family on a farm about one mile north of town. Katharine attended MacPhail School of Music in Minneapolis, where she received a bachelor's degree in piano and voice. This was also where she met Dale Smith and later married him, on Jan.
